We've been hearing rumors about the second season of HBO's surprise hit True Detective since around the time season one wrapped.
Weeks ago we heard Colin Farrell had been cast as the lead. Neither side has denied it yet, so it's a safe bet that that's a done deal.
Yesterday, we received word that Vince Vaughn would join True Detective season two as the show's "main antagonist." Again, no comment from anyone involved, but given how quickly producers shot down rumors that Jessica Chastain would star, silence is basically verification.
Today, we have a full-blown barrage of new information regarding the rest of the cast and the predictably bleak storyline of season two.
Naturally, spoilers lie ahead:
This time, the show will take place in Southern California and center around the death of Ben Caspar - a corrupt city official who's brutal murder seems to have been part of a satanic ritual.
Sounds like disappointingly familiar territory, but our hopes remain high, if only because of the major acting involved with season two:
Mad Men star Elisabeth Moss will reportedly play Ani Bezzerides - Farrell's partner in the murder investigation. She's described by a source as a "non-nonsense Monterrey sheriff whose troubled upbringing has driven her to gambling and alcohol."
Again, sounds awfully season 1-ish, but we'll withhold judgment for now.
The insider also claims Friday Night Lights star Taylor Kitsch will play a troubled (of course) highway patrolman, while 24 and True Blood star Michelle Forbes rounds out the cast as Farrell's ex-wife.
For his part, Farrell will play Ray Velcoro, a "barely functioning" cop with a raging coke habit. Farrell is said to have done years of research for the role.
