Patricia Yurena Rodriguez has become the first national beauty pageant winner to come out publicly as a lesbian.
The winner of Miss Spain in 2008 posted a photo on Instagram late last week of herself and girlfriend DJ Vanessa Cortes in a romantic embrace, captioning the picture “Romeo and Juliet.
It has since attracted over 1,000 comments and over 7,000 Likes.
"I do not regret what I did," Rodriguez told Spanish newspaper, La Opinion de Tenerife, of her reveal. "I'm thrilled with what is happening to me."
After receiving mostly positive support, Rodriguez posted a follow-up Instagram message, thanking fans for their kind words.
She explained that her announcement was not calculated in any way and that she does not have an agenda; she just naturally felt the need to share her story.
"I appreciate the outpouring of support and even more, to rejoice in my happiness," the beauty wrote. "Thank you!!"
Rodriguez won the title of Miss Spain in 2008 and then represented her country in the Miss Universe pageant in 2013. She finished as the runner-up to Venezuela's Maria Gabriela Isler.
