The Bachelor and Bachelorette likes to show off its successful couples (statistically few, but trending upward lately) to prove that the show really works.

Enter Ashley Hebert and J.P. Rosenbaum, married and expecting their first child, for a sweet – and bizarre – segment on last night’s Men Tell All episode.

While the penultimate installment of the season was light on The Bachelorette spoilers, it did feature Ashley, J.P., and  … Greg the Ultrasound Technician.

That’s right. They found out on TV whether their baby is a boy or girl.

“Let’s do this!” Chris Harrison cheered, with the obligatory mention that brief interlude from Andi Dorfman‘s journey was about to make Bachelorette history.

“We’re going to find out the sex of this baby.”

Cute dramatic music. Cue awkwardness of gel being applied to Ashley’s body by Greg with cameras zooming in really, really close for a good angle.

While it would’ve been hilarious, albeit even more tacky, to have Chris promise the results after a commercial break a la American Idol, he did not wait:

It’s a boy!

J.P.’s eyes welled up with tears at the thought of his son, and we were reminded that this couple has always been pretty much perfect together.

At the same time, it felt that we were violating their privacy in a big way, and you couldn’t help but be surprised that they agreed to this stunt.

Congratulations on the upcoming arrival in any case. Tell us in the comments and poll: What do you think of The Bachelorette’s live ultrasound stunt?
