A Dutch national who Tweeted about the Malaysia Airlines flight that crashed yesterday in Ukraine had zero idea how eerie this would soon sound.
Cor Pan was one of the 295 people on board the flight that went down over Ukraine on Thursday. Prior to takeoff, he took a snapshot of the plane.
Posting it on Facebook, he captioned it "If it disappears, this is what it looks like," poking fun at the Malaysia Flight 370, which went missing in March.
In related news, actor Jason Biggs came under fire for Tweeting about the crash yesterday and asking if anyone wanted his frequent flier miles.
The comments on Cor Pan's photo began with friends wishing him a "happy holiday" to thousands of users expressing their utter shock and condolences.
The aircraft, which is believed to have been shot down near the Russian border, was flying from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur when it fell near the city of Donetsk.
Ukraine Interior Ministry official Anton Gerashenko said the plane was taken out by an air-to-ground missile fired from a Buk rocket launcher.
It is far from clear why a commercial plane was targeted with such a weapon.
The Malaysia Airlines Twitter account confirmed it "lost contact of MH17 from Amsterdam," adding that the "last known position was over Ukrainian airspace."
President Barack Obama said that his administration is "working to determine whether there were American citizens on board, that is our first priority."
The president also had a phone conversation with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin about the unfolding events, which are still developing.
