Bill Gothard: Duggar Family's Disgraced Minister Was Funded by Hobby Lobby

by at .  Updated at . Comments

In case you somehow haven't heard, arts and crafts retail chain Hobby Lobby was at the heart of a controversial Supreme Court decision earlier this week.

Millions are outraged that the Oklahoma-based business has been permitted to cite a religious exemption from the national healthcare requirement that they provide coverage for contraceptives.

Now it seems the company may have been involved in even more scandalous practices motivated by its executives' religious principles:

Bill Gothard is a minister and home schooling advocate whose adherents include Sarah Palin and the Duggar family, stars of TLC's 19 Kids and Counting.

Gothard was recently ousted as head of his own church following allegations that he harassed and molested several of his female employees.

Today it's been revealed that Gothard and the controversial fundamentalist organization he founded were funded in large part by Hobby Lobby.

Gothard and the Institute in Basic Life Principles that he ran for several decades reportedly received hundreds of thousands of dollars in cash and real estate from Hobby Lobby CEO David Green and his family.

The Institute in Basic Life Principles was a source of controversy even before Gothard's sex scandal, as Gothard and his fellow ministers espoused far-right fundamentalist ideas that proved too radical for many evangelicals.

The deeply religious Duggars have been called TV's most powerful family, and one of Gothard's victims has publicly urged them to break from the disgraced minister's institute.

The Duggars have yet to publicly respond to that plea.

Back in my day, we all had large families AND we all took care of them ourselves, without daycares, nannies, mama's helpers, etc. etc. etc., and far fewer of our children ended up in jails/prisons than do nowadays.
So what are you doing with your children that is so much more perfect than this family is???

I have one child. Thanks for the comment,
it's not back in the day anymore Y.U.B. You probably had mom or dad at home full time Families today are broken and non-functional because of the fact they have to work two or more jobs and lack the time for full time parenting, not to mention the kids stuck in daycare not getting to know their folks. There are a lot of factors. Personally, Y.U.B. . I feel that having that many children is insane but to each their own, if they can afford to do it off the govt dole/my dime, more power to em. I was trying to add a bit of brevity to the comments
Oh, i'm staying home and my child is going to the fireworks, that's as much as i'll share with you regarding your last questioin. Back in the day! I doubt you are older than me. Take a deep breath kid.

No excuse for Bill Gothard nor is there any excuse for his poor behavior...however if the ministry organization he was associated with and perhaps he was a founder of, held him accountable, ultimately dismissing him for his actions....has acted with such transparency and responsibility, shouldn't they be given some consideration and respect? I know folks that were ministered to by this ministry over several decades, who were powerfully impacted for the good, families and lives restored....perhaps some credit is due for those who have done right and that were willing to take a stand to address a very serious issue within leadership concerning Mr. Gothard

Plus, the only connection the Duggars have is they used that ministry's computer-based in-home schooling sessions to educate their children.
It's not like they were close friends with the guy.

Wrong, wrong, and more wrong.
The Journey to the Heart Program plugged in the book Growing Up Duggar is run by Gothard. David Waller from the show 19 Kids and Counting works for Gothard. He is Josh Duggars brother in law. The campground the family visits in Big Sandy Texas is owned by Gothard. The ALERT program the Duggar boys attend run by Gothard. Michelle and Jim Bob Duggar are paid speakers for Gothard's Embassy Institute. The character qualities list the family uses is part of Gothard's Institute of Basic Life Principles programs. Gothard is in both Erin Bates wedding photos and Josh Duggars wedding photos. Both weddings aired on 19 Kids and Counting. Stop spreading lies that all the family did is use his curriculum because that is 100 percent not true.

Well, I watched the Duggars at first. Then I got tired of them. They have made lots of money on that show and are now being sent all over the world being shown going, doing etc. That is because the show is running out of ideas as to what to do with them. This is happening to lots of other shows also. I am Catholic and I don't believe in abortion, etc. but Michell has had a few really serious illnesses and if any of us who have given birth know it is not a happy go lucky event. YOU CAN DIE. She is putting herself in danger and all they need for that family to happen, with all those small kids etc. is
for her to die. Her husband and her need to grow up. The Catholic church even has a few methods you can use but they know, they are not foolish people, that she can die and they really don't seem to care!

It's their choice; not yours or mine. They are trusting every phase of their lives to God, and that includes her heath and her life.

They are trusting Gothard not God. Are you claiming God didn't advise Michelle on the dangers of pregnancy via trained medical doctors?

"Millions are outraged that the Oklahoma-based business has been permitted to cite a religious exemption from the national healthcare requirement that they provide coverage for contraceptives." More truthful to say millions are outraged that reporters like you can't get the story correct. Hobby Lobby PROVIDES 16 out of a possible 20 "contraceptives." They are permitted to NOT provide 4 meds that abort a human being AFTER conception. That's their religious belief...if you don't like it, don't apply for a job. Not rocket science.

Medical science says their "religious belief" that these contraceptives cause abortions are wrong, no matter what they "believe". Not rocket science.

lara: one of the definitions of "abort" is "to bring to a premature end" ... since science cannot deny that life begins when the sperm fertilizes the egg (no rocket science there!) ... anything that brings to a premature end the development of the resulting organism is an abortifacient. Why do you and others try soooo hard to deny common sense and undeniable science to justify "choice" (your euphemism for murder)???

@ Bobbie M

Bobbie M, there is no pill that aborts a human being after conception. Once the Ova is fertilized it becomes a zygote, a single cell that has the potential, repeat potential to become a fetus. This does not always happen and the result is that it is flushed from the body during the next menstrual cycle. The pill simply prevents the Ova from adhering to the uterine wall. There is no fetus to abort. Please study science and biology prior to making inaccurate statements. The religious use the argument that the zygote is a fetus in order to inflame the argument. If you wish to believe this psycho babble BS that is up to you. Science will prove you wrong.

That's semantics. You know what he meant. And additionally, not all believe life starts at the same time as others do.

Comment modified at

@ Y. U. B. Ridikulus

Not semantics, it's science. Big difference.

Comment modified at

Avatar
@ liam0530

For those who have the perspective that life begins at the moment of conception, when a sperm unites with an egg, any method that prevents implantation of that fertilized egg is abortifacient.

not accurate....but science and religion can't mix. For that matter, truth and religion can't co-exist.

Actually, science HAS managed to find many of the locations, items, etc., mentioned in The Bible - so you're wrong.

Outer space exists too...it doesn't mean that the Heaven's Gate group who committed mass suicide because it helped them reach the alien spacecraft that was coming to save them were correct in their beliefs either. Thunderstorms are quite common...but Thor isn't responsible. Religions require a grain of reality to convince and control the gullible. It's quite profitable to promote a prophet.

So what, it's not like Mr Green defrauded the country with fake id's and ran for election. Mr Green gave the church offerings, who cares he can give money to where ever he wants to and his employees can choose 16 drugs for f*ckin or 4 drugs they can buy on their own. Where is the story on yahoo about obum's fake life and adopted kids? Oh that's coming in september when Joe Arpaio the only honest person left in government reveals who forged obum's birth certificates, social security id, and selective service. I guess it's..... ???? of course it's Bill Ayers, the one and only c*cksucking communist who hates america more than obum the kenyan con man even more. I'll bet they have orgies at man country in chicago chanting "america s*ucks" NO story there, the biggest political fraud in history with a congress who can't even file impeachment until they take both houses. With a speaker of the house who is guilty of treason, sedition and fraud who allowed obum to be on the ballot and a vice president so stupid and so ignorant probably never read article 2 or even cares because obum can write laws with his little pen, who needs congress or the courts right barry?

I think you're forgetting that Gothard was accused of having sexual relationships with some of the female members of the ministry.
As a married man AND as a spiritual leader, that's wrong no matter how it's sliced.
Still, if he wasn't bopping one of the Duggars (and there hasn't been one breath of that happening), what do they have to do with this story at all then?

The only reason this insane couple keeps popping out kids is that she already had one child and then was taking birth control and had a miscarriage so she felt guilty. She hasn't been able to conceive again but they are trying. They need psychological help.

First of all, where'd you get your psyche degree that you think you have credentials sufficient enough to diagnose someone else?
Additionally, until one of their children gets into trouble with the law, I would think the number of children they decide to have is no one else's business and their children staying out of trouble may be a sign they're doing something right, at least in the raising of them.

If you put your family on reality TV you have waved your right to privacy and shelter from public scrutiny. When a Duggar comes up with a life saving medication or solves an environmental crisis facing our world let me know. They have 8 kids over the age of 18 and none are in college or have graduated college. The family has millions of dollars to spend educating their children so they really don't have an excuse to shelter their adult children from higher learning.

I think the Duggars are a wonderful family. They teach their children good manners (refreshing these days), they grow up knowing how to work, and they are happier than your bratty kids who sit around all day watching tv or playing violent video games or shooting other kids at school. At least the Duggar kids aren't very likely to be dependent on the government to support them like your bats.

Josie Duggar was very dependent on the government. Who do you think paid for the millions of dollars in care she got after being born a micro preemie?

Comment modified at

Avatar
@ Independent Thinker

Her parents have medical insurance pal. That's what paid for the "care she got after being born a micro premie".
Were that not true, don't you think rumor of it would have gotten out through hospital workers there???
C'mon, there's always someone gunning for the Duggars out of either misunderstanding, jealousy or just plain meanness, hoping to see one of them trip so they can point and say, "AHA, TOLD YA!!!"
Yet there has never been the slightest breath of scandal or negativity published about them that's ever been researched and found to be true.

Comment modified at

Avatar
@ Y. U. B. Ridikulus

At the time of Josie's birth private insurance was capped usually at 1 million dollars as the lifetime benefit. The Affordable Care Act has eliminated lifetime maximums. In the case of premature births once traditional insurance is exhausted you enter a state level taxpayer subsidized high risk pool. It's not a rumor it's a fact that is easily verifiable with the most basic level of knowledge about how health insurance works.

They're already government-dependent, you idiot, they're just good at being sneaky about it. How much do you think the tax exemptions are on 19 dependents, for example?

Where did you get your medical degree to diagnose the mental weaknesses of others???
Back in my day, we all had large families. And ya know what!?! We fed them all, clothed them all, sheltered them all, cared for them all - all without a mother's helper or nanny or maid.
And ya know what else?
More of ours turned out to be good solid citizens than are being raised in today's 1-2 child homes where kids are way too often being raised as self-centered, spoiled little brats, who are way too often ending up in jail.
