Antonio Banderas and Melanie Griffith married in 1996 and have seemed the ideal Hollywood couple ever since.
Today, however, in a move that stunned fans, Griffith filed for divorce from her husband of 18 years and the father of her 17-year-old daughter.
Griffith cited "irreconcilable differences" for the split and has hired famed divorce attorney to the stars, Laura Wasser.
While all that may cause it to seem that there are ugly proceedings ahead, sources close to the couple assure TMZ that Banderas and Griffith are splitting amicably.
This is the fourth divorce for Griffith and the second for Banderas.
Antonio famously broke it off with his first wife just a month before marrying Griffith, while Melanie was previously married to actors Don Johnson and Steven Bauer.
Despite Melanie Griffiths' stints in rehab, she and Banderas seemed to enjoy a happy, healthy relationship, and they served as a model for other Hollywood couples.
Details about the divorce are scarce at this time and it is not known when the couple decided to separate or if there was a specific incident that prompted Griffith to file papers.
Both Griffith and Banderas have made a habit of publicly showing off tattoos featuring their spouse's name encircled by a heart. We're guessing they won't be doing that anymore.
No word yet on what the couple plans to do regarding custody of their daughter, Stella, or the division of their millions of dollars worth of real estate.
