We opened The Vampire Diaries Season 5 Episode 21 with Stefan and Elena having their doppleganger blood drained by Markos.
But a mysterious woman then freed the pair and they were left weakened and wandering for food of some kind.
They were eventually picked up by the woman who freed them, a Traveler who wanted to reunite with Julian, the Passenger stuck inside of Tyler.
He was locked in the Salvatore mansion and he actually helped Damon fight off Markos because he just wanted to be with his wife.
But the curse to end magic was already underway, thanks to Markos being possessed with Stefan and Elena's blood, leaving all supernatural in a terribly weak state. They had to get as far from Mystic Falls as possible to avoid being gone for good.
Julian (in Tyler's body) made his way to where Caroline and Stefan were waiting for Bonnie on the road, only to learn that his wife died while trying to help free Stefan and Elena. (She was killed in a battle with Liv and Luke, who were trying to kill a doppleganger in order to appease their coven.)
Angry and wanting to end the curse so The Other Side would not fall apart, Julian tore Stefan's heart out.
Yes: HE TORE STEFAN SALVATORE's HEART OUT.
We ended the episode with Stefan passing through Bonnie to The Other Side and all viewers wondering: if Stefan actually dead?!?
It's safe to say we'll be tuning in to The Vampire Diaries Season 5 finale to find out.
