The 2010 animated film How to Train Your Dragon proved to be a surprise smash hit for DreamWorks, and now the studio is reportedly taking a bold and admirable risk with the movie's forthcoming sequel.
How to Train Your Dragon 2 is slated for release in June, and according to the film's writer and director it will feature a scene in which a beloved character subtly acknowledges that he's gay.
Filmmaker Dean Deblois - who is openly gay himself - discussed the making of the sure-to-be-controversial scene and the decision to have Gobber the Belch (voiced by Craig Ferguson) reveal his sexual orientation.
In the scene, Gobber watches a husband and wife argue. "When we were recording Craig Ferguson, I had written the line, 'This is why I never got married,'" says Deblois. "[Ferguson], as he often does, added it as an ad lib and said, 'Yup, Gobber's coming out of the closet.'"
The version of the scene that will appear in the final cut of the film will reportedly have Gobber simply acknowledge that there is an unnamed "other reason" why he never got hitched.
"I think that's a really fun, daring move to put in," added Delbois. "I love the idea that Gobber is Berk's resident gay."
Asked by Fox News about the potential backlash that may accompany the inclusion of a gay character in a children's movie, Delbois stated simply, "It's progressive, it's honest, and it feels good...so we wanted to keep it."
Many expect the scene to divide audiences in the same fashion as the Michael Sam kiss that made waves during the most recent NFL draft.
