Conchita Wurst is a 25-year-old Austrian man who has dressed and identified as a woman for most of his life.
Judging by the video below, he’s also got some serious pipes:
Sadly, the Eurovision Song Contest in which Wurst competed over the weekend is a more of s stodgy, traditional affair than American Idol or The Voice, and some audience members watching from home were taped booing at the sight of Wurst dressed as a woman.
That was no matter in the long run, however, as Wurst – who refers to himself as "the bearded lady" – went on to win the competition that helped launch the careers of Celine Dion and Julio Iglesias.
So, overall, it was a good weekend for triumphing over haters.
Michael Sam was drafted by the St. Louis Rams, becoming the NFL’s first openly gay player, and Conchita Wurst proved that talent will always overpower bigotry.
The Eurovision competition requires not only singing ability, as competitors must perform songs that they composed themselves.
So needless to say, Conchita has some serious talent, and the uproar that made her a worldwide trending topic will likely only help her career take off.
