Caroline Wozniacki and Rory McIlroy got engaged in January and seemed to be on he verge of becoming a new power couple in the world of sports.

Today, however, McIlroy unexpectedly ended his relationship with the Danish tennis star, demonstrating that he’s about as committed to the idea of marriage as another, more famous golfer.

Despite announcing the breakup this morning, McIlroy remarkably still appeared at a previously scheduled press conference today in advance of this week’s BMW PGA Championship.

Reporters on hand say Rory McIlroy appeared to be on the verge of tears as he discussed his relationship with Caroline Wozniacki.

"Yeah, obviously quite a difficult time for Caroline and myself," said McIlroy.

"It was mutual and amicable and we both thought it was the best for us, the best for both of us. Time to move on and I think I’ve said all I need to say."

McIlroy’s claim that the breakup was "mutual" conflicts with the description given earlier in the day by his communications team earlier in the official announcement of the canceled wedding:

 

"The wedding invitations issued at the weekend made me realize that I wasn’t ready for all that marriage entails," read McIlroy’s statement. "I wish Caroline all the happiness she deserves and thank her for the great times we’ve had."

Wozniacki and McIlroy began dating in July of 2011.
