Due to the tragic death of her dog, Miley Cyrus is very sad these days.

But, as the singer explains in the latest issue of Elle, this isn’t the first time she’s been mired in a depressed funk.

“I went through a time where I was really depressed,” the 21-year old tells the magazine. “I locked myself in my room and my dad had to break my door down…

“I had really bad skin, and I felt really bullied because of that. But I never was depressed because of the way someone else made me feel, I just was depressed.”

Cyrus is fortunately doing a lot better these days.

And while she’s become well known for her crazy costumes (or no costumes at all; see these Miley Cyrus topless pics), Cyrus says she cares a lot more about being a role model than a fashion model.

“That gives me a big purpose – a reason to wake up in the morning,” she says of inspiring other struggling teenagers. “That’s bigger than to put on my f-cking feathers and my little outfits.”

In other excerpts from the revealing interview, Miley touches on Disney, Liam Hemsworth and why she considers herself a feminist…

On Disney: “I’m really thankful that I started on Disney. I got the most intense training. There’s times where I wish I could have just started as a new artist, but the world has kind of allowed me to do that.”

On her split from Hemsworth: “I lay in bed at night by myself and I’m totally okay, and that’s so much stronger than the person three years ago, who would have thought they would have died if they didn’t have a boyfriend.”

On inspiring her fans: “I have guys and girls that come out, and they’re like, ‘The only reason I’m able to admit that I’m gay is because you’ve made me feel like that’s okay.’ That is so intense, because that is a part of this generation – it wasn’t always accepted – and I feel like I am a big part of that change.”

On double standards: “I’m just about equality, period… I still don’t think we’re there 100 percent. I mean, guy rappers grab their crotch all f-cking day and have hos around them, but no one talks about it.

“But if I grab my crotch and I have hot model bitches around me, I’m degrading women? I’m a woman – I should be able to have girls around me! But I’m part of the evolution of that. I hope.”

This isn’t the first time Miley has claimed to be a feminist. Do you think she is?
