Lorde ditches her typical grunge/goth/intentionally non-glamorous look on Teen Vogue’s latest cover, upon which she glows like we’re not used to seeing.

The Grammy-Winning singer (real name Ella Yelich-O’Connor), 17, dons traditional makeup and a basic plaid scarf, while letting her locks run loose.

When it comes to her usual appearance – in other words, sans Teen Vogue cover shoot prep – she’s the first to admit that her style is on the plainer side.

Although she understands there are “expectations in [the] industry about looking a certain way,” Lorde tells the mag she prefers her tomboy look.

“I am feminine, but I really love dressing in boys’ clothes too. I guess that’s why I get labeled as ‘the grumpy girl,’ because I don’t play into that.”

Although she famously declares “we’ll never be royals” in her breakout song, the teen herself is beginning to adjust to her newfound fame and lifestyle.

“In New Zealand, you don’t get these experiences,” the girlfriend of James Lowe admits. “I spent so much time in my room before. My life is so wild right now.”

“To be able to do something I really enjoy and for that to get me out in the world, to South America, here, London, every day I kick myself, I’m so lucky.”
