Elle magazine released a preview of its annual Women In Music issue today and the editors' list of the top acts to watch features some very different talents.

The ladies of Elle's annual Women In Music Issue. The list features a diverse array of talents.

Ariana Grande's nude photo scandal may be the only reason many adults know her name, but Elle says the longtime Nickelodeon star and budding singer is a talent worthy of music fans' attention.

Grande has been vocal about her desire to shed her squeaky-clean image and be taken seriously as a musician.

On the other end of the spectrum is Aussie rapper Iggy Azalea who's had no problem convincing industry experts that she's the real deal. Azalea's freshman studio album doesn't hit US stores until next week, but she's been a known name in hip hop circles for years.

Elle's list blends genres and eras to represent a good cross-section of female musical talents as different as pop legend Cher and indie rock up-and-comers Warpaint.

If most of these names don't ring a bell, don't worry - you're not alone. According to Elle's editors, one of the goals of the issue is to expose these ladies to a larger audience in an effort to help them "break boundaries" in the music world.

In the past, the magazine's annual feature has helped jumpstart the careers of singers such as Adele and Lana Del Rey.
