Gabrielle Union opened up to the ladies of The View about how she coped with sexual assault.
The actress was raped at gunpoint at the age of 19. Now she's sharing how she embraced being a survivor and let go of being a victim.
The 41-year-old beauty revealed that she "got sick of people letting me off the hook."
"Being a victim is so comfortable. People give you attention, people are nurturing… When something catastrophic happens, everyone rallies around you."
But "The Think Like a Man" star didn't want to be treated that way because she went through something traumatic.
"But it’s not for something positive. I hated that. I hated feeling like a victim. I hated the cloak of victimhood," the star, who's engaged to Dwyane Wade, explained.
Gabrielle wanted to feel like the survivor she knew she was.
“I want to embrace being a survivor, because that’s who I am. I wasn’t raised to be coddled. I was raised to be an independent woman, standing on my own two feet, and that’s the road I opted to take."
