Coca-Cola Super Bowl Ad Spurs Controversy: Patriotic or Problematic?

by at . Comments

Chalk it up to one of the biggest Super Bowl blowouts in history? Maybe? Hopefully?

But the following Coca-Cola commercial, which premiered during Seattle's thrashingΒ  of Denver, is stirring up major controversy online because some critics find it un-American.

The spot features a number of people from different backgrounds singing "America the Beautiful" in different languages, prompting the hashtag #SpeakAmerican to break out on Twitter.

"Coke having a commercial with an American song in other languages... not cool. Coke. GTFO with that," wrote one hater, while another added:

"Still confused as to why they were singing about America in all those foreign languages in the Coke commercial. We speak English..."

Others, meanwhile, see this commercial as being decidedly American, showcasing how the American Dream is specifically tied to the melting pot of such cultures.

This Cheerios commercial, which features a biracial family, is also blowing up the Twitterverse.

React now to the Coca-Cola ad above. How do you feel about it?

If anyone thinks this is beautiful or doesn't understand the fuss, then I think the tipping point of egalitarianism having replaced the heritage and values of America..

@ Acelt

the values of America: invade a country and rid it of its natives to claim it its own....Let me think about that for a second.

In response to the Coke commercial, next year Pepsi and Fox should have Phil Robertson of Duck Dynasty do the Declaration of Independence in Russian. Singing a American classic like "America the Beautiful" in foreign languages should be treasonous.

So much for the idea that our country is a melting pot. I loved the Coke commercial and did not for a minute think it was un-'Mericun until I saw the hate tweets. Sad for this country.

@ Raven

I felt your comment was American, until i saw your sarcastic un-american -"merican" statement in there. Sad for this country indeed.

Well said Raven. Well fucked Ryan.

The only thing that I don't like about this commercial is that it almost sells the idea that everyone wants to be from the US. The truth is far away from that. Not to disrespect your country, but sometimes I get the feeling that you think you are superior to everyone in every aspect. Yes, you are one of the, if not the most, powerful country, but that does not mean that everyone wants to be like you. A concrete example, America is a continent, commonly divided in north and south, but its still one continent, so: USA is not America, its just a country in America.
Don't get me wrong, I like your country a lot, no doubt on that. I have been there, I know people that live or have lived there. My best friend is from the US, I am just saying the feeling that the commercial gives me.
PS: seriously I am not trying to start a debate ir anything, so please, don't insult me, I am not trying to do that to anyone.

Have you not learned to write your own language, which is actually european (ANGLO +SAXON)?

The US can be a great place to be from, but it is not perfect. Some Americans forget that we are tasked with continuing to work on forming a more perfect union. The division of peoples even in the USA shows our perfect union needs work. Then there are some Americans that believe we are exceptional seeing only the splinters in other countries' eyes while ignoring the log in the USA's eye. My two of my grandparents were immigrants, another was a daughter of a freed slave and the son of the plantation owner. To me this commercial spoke of my experience as a US citizen. People coming from all over. We all have the same goal, to live a good life, raise our children in a safe place, and hope they can have a more successful life than we had. When it comes to singing America the Beautiful in different languages, I don't really have that much of a problem. After all, after years of working in Canada, I can sign the Canadian national anthem in French, English, or a mix.

It is common and healthy to have pride in anyones country. I'm sure if I were Jsmacian I would feel the same about Jamaca. I feel MY country IS superior to other countries. IFeel the same about my sports team (even if they lose). It's called pride. So try and understand its not we believe your country to you is the same.

I'll be drinking PEPSI. From now on!!!!!

@ CC

I already drink Pepsi. But i felt like Coke was, ontop of trying to push their soda, was also trying to push a liberal agenda.

Avatar
@ CC

agreed and I already wrote Coca Cola a scathin letter telling them just that fact....That commercial was a slap in the face to every brave young man and woman serving in the military vs the forces of terror in this world...as well as to all of the loyal, tax paying American's who made this great country what it is...Im so afraid for my grandkids....what will this country be like in 20 yrs...

@ r country

Don't worry, you'll always find another war to send your kids to, like every 30 years since you stole these lands from their natives ;)

Extremely bad taste, this un-American rendition. The images added to the poor taste. Would a 1940's newsreel show "America The Beautiful" in German and Japanese, and add an image of Tojo or Himmler? The face of a yasser Arafat wasn't used --- why not?
If Coca Cola is among those collaborators who want no criticism of islam, they should perhaps avoid dirtying the USA first! Coke can sell their sugar water to the Saudis from now on.

Avatar
@ Hans Schaden

Dirtying the country stolen from their natives, where you speak a language originally taken from Europe (anglo saxon) and where 99% are foreign descendants....And I bet you use absolutely no Made in China products either....Funny, in a pathetic way.

Rohuahua! for Audi was hysterical! Only one that made me laugh out loud! Tho Arnold Schwarzenegger in the Bud commercial was a close second...but just his part.

We're looked at as capitalists taking their money, led by a confused president who's a Marxist/Communist wannabe, that bows to other leaders. We are not seeing other countries singing America the Beautiful. Coke is loved around the world, not America. They ain't singin' r song.

Avatar
@ MontanaTrace

I would much rather have a president with manners, common sense, and the intelligence to know the customs of the other nations on this planet. I lived and worked in Europe and South America during the last buffoon's, Bush#2, reign. I was so embarrassed. I guess you missed the Saudi King bowing to Obama. See that is how things go between well mannered, civilized people. I show respect to you, you show respect to me. Then if need be we can kill each other on the battlefield.

Avatar
@ Sierra

U.S.A. Presidents do not "bow" to anyone. Obama has shown his lack of manners, common sense and lack of intelligence many, many times. His treatment of Great Britain and Israel especially has been appalling. Sierra, you need to check out the antics of the present buffoon.

Avatar
@ koala

Do not 'bow' to anyone.... there could be a nice Bowden joke right there.

Coke did it for the controversy...just like Cheeros did and a bunch of other companies do. Companies want people to discuss and remember their product. I don't like it that Coca-Cola purposely stired up controversy in this manner with "America the Beautiful". One side will paint the other as intollerant and these things always get ungly and never productive. Coke should have stuck to their "I'd like to teach the world to sing" ditty. As far as not buying their product, I really prefer RC cola...its 1/2 the price of Coke and Pepsi in my supermarket :)
