Kordale and Kaleb, Gay Black Dads, Post Family Instagram Photos, Respond to Criticism

An Instagram photo of two gay fathers, Kordale and Kaleb, has gone viral for a number of reasons, some of which you might not expect at first glance.

Kordale and Kaleb, who have three kids and a sizable social media, have been receiving homophobic and racist backlash after sharing the image below:

Kordale and Kaleb Photo
Kordale and Kaleb are two gay dads who have become a lightning rod for conversation due to their Instagram account and family photos.

The idea of two gay black men raising kids, it seems, is just too much for Twitter to take. Even some positive responses are more like backhanded compliments.

Many of the more overtly racist, homophobic Tweets have been removed, but the ones like "finally a black gay couple" are equally as problematic to the duo.

Most of the positive feedback hit on two key points:

  1. That Kordale and Kaleb are a black gay couple, in general
  2. That it was nice to see black men taking care of children

Indeed, the controversy surrounding this photo raises many broad cultural questions. Kordale and Kaleb responded to them in a statement to the Huffington Post:

As far as the positive; yes we are two gay men with three kids who have no problem with preparing them for their education every morning; that comes with anything and everything they may need for school!

Our kids are blessed to have three parents (Kordale, Kaleb and their Mother) who love, care and support them in every decision they have made and will continue to make as they get older.

We are blessed to have the ability to provide for them in ways that a lot of people cannot for their family, which ultimately makes us happy knowing that they don't want for much! Our main objective as parents is to provide, love, educate, support, encourage, and love some more!

In regard to the negative, people fail to realize that we are people too with kids who love us. We do what is necessary for them to succeed in this ever-changing world but it's sad that we're discriminated against because of our sexuality and/or what we do behind closed doors - which is no one's business.

In the same breath, we take all of what's been said in stride.

The picture was put out on social media for an opinion so we can't be mad when people give just that: an opinion. People tend to think that gay people cannot raise their children to be heterosexuals.

Instead, they have derogatory thoughts of us "tainting" our children or "confusing them" with what society sees deems as wrong an unmanly because we're gay. But this is all comical because people forget where a lot of gays come from: a heterosexual household.

This is another prime example of where we are as a nation in 2014 - continuous discrimination against gays. Being gay is the new normal for a lot of people and judgment isn't needed, just equality! We may be gay but this does not mean we are incapable of what a heterosexual couple is capable of!

Us gays are just as educated and passionate about what we do and how we do it!

It's their life, let them do what they want… commenters shouldn't waste their thoughts and feelings on what other people are doing. focus on your own life

I'm not a hater, so let's get it right. I love these guys and commend anyone for taking good care of children, teaching, nurturing and loving them, but gayness is just unnatural. When the Lord created the first home, He did it with one man and one woman. Try having a baby with two of the same sex and you will fail. It won't happen because it can't happen. They're right about one thing, it's their business, but they'd better get their business right with the one who created sexuality in the beginning. Praying for them

You are right and because they were the only people on earth their children would have had to marry each other. So is incest okay because it is obviously okay in the Bible.

Yes, you are a hater. If a true home is defined as having one man and one woman, all those Old Testament polygamous families would be fails too, right? What about single parents that raise kids? They are fails too? God created gays and loves them all.

no, single parents are not failures, most of them have been failed by someone else. And noooo, incest has never been blessed in the Bible. matter of fact it is sharply rebuked along with adultery, and every other sexual sin outside the sanctity of marriage between a man and a woman. But I know I can't straighten out the world alone. I'm but one voice, but I am a voice. God bless you and I hope you'll someday understand my point. I hate no one:)

PITI--FULL. First of all they are not dads..at least they are men...but, they are closer to CON-FU-SI-ON than men. Plz STOP trying to pretend that they are just normal Black males trying to raise a family. Poor kids. I pray God rescue them.

Bobbie...you're the one with the PITIFUL attitude. And, you are clearly closed-minded and homophobic. You need to get your head out of your ass. It is 2014!!!!!

I would have gladly traded my straight mom for even one of these two GAY dads. Asking for two parents would have been unimaginable. I am sure my life would have been far less f-ed up. Since you mention God, these are two God created-in-HIS-IMAGE men. God does not make mistakes. God did rescue these girls and put them with Kaleb and Kordale. I pray that someday your soul might be saved and that you will come to know the love of God.

The kids are fine--kids need loving, involved parents and they turn out fine. There are over 2 million, yes 2 million, pay families in the US. The kids are doing just fine.

I think your comment was PITI-FULL! "Black males trying to raise a family. Poor kids" has to be the most ignorant statement ever. Men of color aren't capable of raising families? Raising a family has nothing to do with color or sexual preference..raising a family requires love, patience and respect. Kudos to Kordale and Kaleb-I wish nothing but the best for them!!!

Pretty silly comment on your part. The only question you should be asking is if they are loving caring parent's. It seems to me that they are. Love is Love regardless of one's sexual orientation. Where does it say that they can't be any less a loving couple than a traditional family, whatever that mean's. Need to get over your homophobia and join the 21st century.

Good for you guys! I don't see anything wrong with the pictures. Looks like you have a loving and happy family. At the end of the day that's all that really matters. You, your family and your children are what matter in your life, nobody else opinion matters or counts. People in this country need to stop butting in to other people lives, how their choose to live and the choices their make for their own individual lives . Live your life to the fullest and God Bless you and your family.

I dont really see what the controversy is about.
Only issue I see is how dumb tattoos look on blacks.

I work with a foster care agency in a large city. Everyday, I see what can happen to children who do not have loving parents who are willing or able to take care of them properly. I think it is wonderful that these children have three loving and supportive parents who will guide them to be loving and productive members of society.
On a minor note: In your statement you said "Us gays are educated..." and it should be "We gays are educated.." If you're going to teach the kids - teach them well.

I give you all the praise in the world for doong what you do. Dont let those other people get yall down.keep your head up
