Kordale and Kaleb, Gay Black Dads, Post Family Instagram Photos, Respond to Criticism

An Instagram photo of two gay fathers, Kordale and Kaleb, has gone viral for a number of reasons, some of which you might not expect at first glance.

Kordale and Kaleb, who have three kids and a sizable social media, have been receiving homophobic and racist backlash after sharing the image below:

Kordale and Kaleb Photo
Kordale and Kaleb are two gay dads who have become a lightning rod for conversation due to their Instagram account and family photos.

The idea of two gay black men raising kids, it seems, is just too much for Twitter to take. Even some positive responses are more like backhanded compliments.

Many of the more overtly racist, homophobic Tweets have been removed, but the ones like "finally a black gay couple" are equally as problematic to the duo.

Most of the positive feedback hit on two key points:

  1. That Kordale and Kaleb are a black gay couple, in general
  2. That it was nice to see black men taking care of children

Indeed, the controversy surrounding this photo raises many broad cultural questions. Kordale and Kaleb responded to them in a statement to the Huffington Post:

As far as the positive; yes we are two gay men with three kids who have no problem with preparing them for their education every morning; that comes with anything and everything they may need for school!

Our kids are blessed to have three parents (Kordale, Kaleb and their Mother) who love, care and support them in every decision they have made and will continue to make as they get older.

We are blessed to have the ability to provide for them in ways that a lot of people cannot for their family, which ultimately makes us happy knowing that they don't want for much! Our main objective as parents is to provide, love, educate, support, encourage, and love some more!

In regard to the negative, people fail to realize that we are people too with kids who love us. We do what is necessary for them to succeed in this ever-changing world but it's sad that we're discriminated against because of our sexuality and/or what we do behind closed doors - which is no one's business.

In the same breath, we take all of what's been said in stride.

The picture was put out on social media for an opinion so we can't be mad when people give just that: an opinion. People tend to think that gay people cannot raise their children to be heterosexuals.

Instead, they have derogatory thoughts of us "tainting" our children or "confusing them" with what society sees deems as wrong an unmanly because we're gay. But this is all comical because people forget where a lot of gays come from: a heterosexual household.

This is another prime example of where we are as a nation in 2014 - continuous discrimination against gays. Being gay is the new normal for a lot of people and judgment isn't needed, just equality! We may be gay but this does not mean we are incapable of what a heterosexual couple is capable of!

Us gays are just as educated and passionate about what we do and how we do it!

I think it is so refreshing to see that men care enough to raise children with love and values and it doesn't matter whether they are gay what do matters is that they care and it beats the hell out of sterotypes about black men all props go out to the parents of these children who took time to be parents no matter what the preference is little ones comes first cause without love and understanding they would be raising young criminals but in this case Kordale and Kaleib keep strong and continue doing your very best grace be unto you. Peace and love.

i have no problem with gay men or the ffact that k n k are gay and raising children, however what i do have a problem with is what the hell was the mother thinking? ..that is what i truly cant get my head around, why would you have 3 children with 2 gay men, talk about risking sexual diseases spreading, cant be gay if you sleep with women either, snm.

Your response shows your level of education learn how to spell and second you don''t have to sleep with a man to get pregnant anymore. She could have been a surrogate some women don't want to be mothers and choose to give that blessing to others would there be a problem if it was a straight couple using a surrogate.

God has the final say! He does not condone Homosexual behaviors at all! If I want to go to heaven I must honor what the Lords says and being “GAY” is not one of those behaviors God tolerates. I am saddened when I hear people call Christians homophobic. That’s a made up term by those who are for living a sinful lifestyle. God loves us all but he does not love our sins. You need to study and read your bible; Lev 18:22-23 22 "Homosexuality is absolutely forbidden, for it is an enormous sin. 23 A man shall have no sexual intercourse with any female animal, thus defiling himself; and a woman must never give herself to a male animal, to mate with it; this is a terrible perversion. "Lev 18:22-23 2'You shall not lie with a male as one lies with a female; it is an abomination. 23'Also you shall not have intercourse with any animal to be defiled with it, nor shall any woman stand before an animal to mate with it; it is a perversion. you're an idiot and a bigot..the men who wrote those lines very well may have been gay themselves, just like many of the priests today… who preach from an ancient book written by men intended to control society.

As a gay male, I commend what K & K are doing. It is very classist and egregious to judge these men based on things as asinine as their sexuality or the fact that they have tattoos. Are the kids healthy? Are the clothed? Are they advancing in school? These are the questions people should want the answer to. It sickens me that even on the threshold of 2014, that people who identify as homosexual receive such a backlash. Why do you think that there are so many closeted and DL men and women? They are scared to come out and face what people display to uncloseted homosexuals. I guess we should all go back to the 1940s and 1950s when everyone's uncles and dads were secretly sleeping with each other behind their wives backs. At least then it was acceptable. #ha

Hello, I'm not gay and I'm not black but I believe in the importance, invested to us by God, of raising kids in a safe, nice and secure environment and judging from your photographs that's exactly what you guys are doing. So: just keep being yourselves and continue just like you're doing and your kids will be happy, funloving and responsible adults. And that's what counts.

I think it is great that these guys are loving and supporting these kids. Why do people always have to be so negitive about everything. As long as these girls are happy and being take care of, mind your business.

The only thing that puts me off from this picture is that they have tattoos... I can only imagine 14 or 10 years from now, those kids will be exposed to recreational drugs an alcohol... Probably even have tattoos before the age of 15...... So, really it's not the two dads complex, just the tattoos.... Tattoos always equal bad or unwanted behavior

This is the biggest load of codswallop I've ever read. I know plenty of people with tattoos (in my family especially), that are decent, wonderful, respectable people. The only thing I can get from your post is that you must be young, and not mature enough to understand how absolutely ridiculous your words seem to the rest of us. It's not what is on your body that defines you, it's the state of your mind, your spirit, and your actions that define who you are. Not what has been inked into your skin.

You're insane. Do some research and show any proof whatsoever that the huge percentage of adults with tattoos are any more likely to expose their children to recreational drugs or alcohol or to bring them to get tattoos themselves "before the age of 15." I don't have any tattoos and don't want any, but I don't know what backwards place you're from, and if you think that in this day and age tattoos make someone a bad parent, much less in the ways you've suggested, you're as baselessly discriminatory as anyone else who's passed a negative judgment on this couple for any other reason.
