Funeral selfies, a phenomenon real enough that there's a Tumblr blog devoted to it, show that our society may have hit a new, self-absorbed low.

A collection of strangely un-sad Instagrams, Tweets, and Facebook posts have been gathered on a Tumblr blog (naturally) called "Selfies at Funerals."

'Cause after all, no moment in life, or death, is too serious or trivial to pass without posting a rapid, vapid response - or cute pic! - on social media.

"Love my hair today. Hate why I'm dressed up #funeral," reads the caption of a self-portrait snapped by a young woman dressed in black at a funeral.

"Killin the selfie game at pop's funeral," tweeted a joyful young man mocking a piece of statuary at the service (we wish we were making that up).

Another photo on the blog of a blonde girl pouting in a pink bedroom with a "Keep Calm and Rock On" sign is titled, simply, "depressing funeral selfie."

Halloween. It's a time for parties, people to apparently dress like a Boston Marathon bombing victim and for Jimmy Kimmel to ask parents to prank their children.

Yes, for the third year in a row, the ABC talk show host had viewers submit home videos of themselves telling their kids that they ate all their Halloween candy. Oops! Sorry!

The reactions are as priceless and as tear-filled as you'd expect. Especially when the kids are still in costume.

Watch now and take note of the young responses when filled in on the joke. Well, that's not very kind! No, kid, it's not. But it's pretty darn funny!

Kimmel, of course, loves his pranks. We still haven't forgiven the guy for fooling us into believing this epic Twerking fail was real.

On Sunday, Joy Johnson became the oldest woman to finish the 2013 New York City Marathon, inspiring millions with her dedication to the event.

On Monday, this 86-year old passed away.

According to Joy's sister, the impressive runner fell and hit her head around the 20-mile mark over the weekend, yet insisted on completing the course.

The next morning, however - after being interviewed by Al Roker on the Today Show - Johnson died in her sleep. Her body was found later Monday afternoon.

Note to all you tabloids: Do not mess with Tom Cruise. He does not view bad celebrity gossip lightly, even if few take your magazines seriously anyway.

He is a man who is very private about his personal life, cares a lot about his reputation, and has more money than small countries. Just leave him be.

Some celebs, such as Kim Kardashian, likely view any publicity as good publicity. Being in the exploitation business, you can sort of see why, too.

Tom Cruise is not in the exploitation business, however, and he is suing celebrity gossip magazine Life & Style for claiming he “abandoned” his daughter.

In the wake of his split from Katie Holmes, Tom says he never turned his back on Suri Cruise, and wants legal payback against L&S for saying he did.

Democrat Terry McAuliffe was elected governor of Virginia in a race over Republican Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli that was as close as it was bitter.

McAuliffe topped Cuccinelli in a surprisingly razor-thin 47-46 percent victory to become Virginia's next governor, ending a divisive, polarizing campaign.

McAuliffe's win breaks a long Virginia tradition going all the way back to 1977 of voting for a governor from the opposing party of the sitting U.S. president.

Virginia, unlike most states in America, only allows one term as governor, so a new individual is chosen to lead the Commonwealth every four years.

Virginia was one of two U.S. states choosing governors Tuesday, along with New Jersey, where popular Republican Gov. Chris Christie was re-elected.

A slew of local elections also took place, including elections for big-city mayors (Bill de Blasio will lead New York City) and various state ballot initiatives.

That. Was. Awesome.

On the latest episode of The Originals, Elijah proved that he's a man of his word.

He's also a man with a fierce love of family and Agnes The Elder Witch learned that the hard way this week: after Elijah promised Sophie that he would not allow Klaus to kill her... the best-dressed supernatural on TV did the deed himself.

By snapping her neck. After he tore out the hearts of her witchy friends, that is.

Daniel Gillies has always portrayed Elijah as the calm, reasonable, rational member of the original family.

Lamar Odom turns 34 years old today.

And while that's exciting and while we wish the troubled baller all the very best, it's really more fascinating than anything else: Will Khloe Kardashian Tweet or Instagram her best wishes?

She's done so over the past few days for mother Kris Jenner and half-sister Kendall Jenner, as each of those loved ones celebrated a birthday.

Lamar Odom on Bench

But the problems with Khloe and Lamar run deep.

Chris Christie was re-elected as New Jersey governor in a landslide Tuesday, posting a 60-39 percent victory over his challenger, state Sen. Barbara Buono.

For months, the popular Republican held a sizable lead in the polls as Buono failed to get her campaign off the ground. He never gave an inch.

Chris Christie was re-elected with widespread support from men, women, independents, members of his own party, and even three in 10 Democrats.

"I'm the luckiest guy in the world," Christie said, flanked by his wife Mary Pat and their four children, during his acceptance speech in Asbury Park, N.J.

The Democratic challenger, Buono, won the votes of liberals, African-Americans, and young voters, but that was not nearly enough to stop Christie.

Democrat Bill de Blasio defeated Republican Joe Lhota to be elected the 109th mayor of New York City. He will succeed Michael Bloomberg at the helm.

The 52-year-old Bill de Blasio has held the office of New York City Public Advocate since 2010, and was favored to win the race easily, which he did.

He is expected to receive at least 70 percent of the vote at last count.

A populist, he has promised to help close the gap between the rich and poor, which is a big change from his Republican turned independent predecessor.

Despite his unprecedented progress on some social issues, Bloomberg has been criticized by de Blasio for the widening equality gap in N.Y. City.

Also, his stop-and-frisk policy became a talking point, with the mayor-elect even saying he offers "an unapologetic progressive alternative" to Bloomberg.
