It’s too soon to tell, but Angelina Jolie as Maleficent, the famed Sleeping Beauty villain, already looks like that rare, perfect pairing of actor and role.

The film’s first poster has been released, and leaves little doubt who the star is: Jolie, as the title character who curses the young Princess Aurora:

The actress is mesmerizing in the horned headdress that her evil, green-eyed, green-faced character was famous for in the 1959 animated classic.

Maleficent opens May 30, 2014, and co-stars Elle Fanning as Aurora.

It isn’t a simple live-action Sleeping Beauty remake, though. Jolie’s wicked sorceress is front and center in what sounds like an origins story of sorts.

Here’s the official plot synopsis: “A beautiful and pure-hearted young woman, Maleficent has an idyllic life growing up in a peaceable forest kingdom.”

“One day, when an invading army threatens the harmony of the land. Maleficent rises to be the land’s fiercest protector, but she ultimately suffers a ruthless betrayal.”

This is the act “that begins to turn her pure heart to stone.”

“Bent on revenge, Maleficent faces an epic battle with the invading king’s successor and, as a result, places a curse upon his newborn infant Aurora.”

“As the child grows, Maleficent realizes that Aurora holds the key to peace in the kingdom – and perhaps to Maleficent’s true happiness as well.”
