Maria Kang Accused of "Fit-Shaming" Women With Facebook Pic, Issues Non-Apology

by at .  Updated at . Comments

Maria Kang, a very fit mom of three, is accused of "fit-shaming" women in a Facebook photo she shared, and now refuses to apologize for.

The 32-year-old fitness enthusiast and former beauty queen shared this image of herself in a workout bra and short shorts, flaunting her toned body:

Maria Kang (Fit Mom) Photo

Alongside her? Kang's three sons, ages 3 years, 2 years, and 8 months, with the caption: "What's Your Excuse?" Just motivating others, right?

Depends who you ask. The picture sparked a comment war, with many of 12,000 (!) responses accusing her of fat-shaming, a charge Kang denies.

After she responded with what she calls a "non-apology," the debate escalated. How did she address some of the criticism she received? Read on ...

"I'm sorry you took an image and resonated with it in such a negative way," she wrote.

"I won't go into details that I struggled with my genetics, had an eating disorder, work full time owning two businesses, have no nanny, am not naturally skinny and do not work as a personal trainer."

"What I WILL say is this. What you interpret is not MY fault. It's yours. The first step in owning your life, your body and your destiny is to OWN the thoughts that come out of your own head."

"I didn't create them. You created them. So if you want to continue 'hating' this image, get used to hating many other things for the rest of your life."

Kang's point is that mom who don't work out are lazy and fat, but that you can and should make fitness a part of your life even when you're a busy mom.

If you saw that photo of her and felt bad about yourself, too bad.

One can understand, up to a point, why someone who doesn't look like Maria would react in an intense, even negative way to the image she posted.

Perspectives are skewed by own unique challenges, and enhanced by our own insecurities. Maybe some felt she was bragging or showing off, too.

It doesn't mean she was "shaming" anyone else here, however. Nor was she going on other people's Facebook pages and writing hateful comments.

Perhaps Kang's approach was the issue, not her intent.

What if she wrote "What's your motivation?" Instead of "What's your excuse?" Or been more sympathetic and less defensive in her reply? Would it be different?

Well, too bad that the fatties feel so offended. If you r not happy with something, change it. I have a lot of big friends, guess what most of them complain that they do work out n see no result. Let me give you a definition of working out and eating healthy according to big people: Eating extra large fries from McDonalds, a whole cake by themselves then a diet code. They then go to the gym once every blue moon and watch the t.v all day long. When they dnt see any result from their so called healthy eating plan., they start complaining and say being fat is in their genes. Now tell me, why should we be sensitive towards those people who are literally eating themselves to death. No man, losing weight is a simple equation: Burn more calories+ consume less= losing weight. There. if anyone feels attacked by my comment, they can go and hang themselves in a tomato tree. Thanx

@ Nombuso

Tomatoes don't grow on trees you know. The closest thing to a tomato tree would have to be a tamarillo shrub but they really aren't sturdy enough for the activity you propose.

More power to her! I think this is an awesome photo and I celebrate her for doing what works for her. If working out is not a priority for you, then more power to you too, it's not my priority either. Do what's right for you. But if you're gonna be offended by this then you're showing your own insecurities. Why post comments justifying yourself if you think she's wrong? Doesn't make sense.

She was a bodybuilder with breast implants.

wah! She's bullying me by not being a fat load like me!

No nanny? really? with 2 homecares? you are full of it! maria Pu-keng keng. LIARRRRRRR

Any woman that birthed a baby will have a strecth marks? What's your excuse for that? Aha....photoshop?

She is just too much of a liar. I am 5'2, 110 lbs, 7 kids, 2 of my own, 5 adopted from birth to 16. Military, drives 150 miles 5x a week, runs 3-5 miles every other day, asian and did not eat rice, white bread for 6 mos now (because I wanted to be 105 but can't lose it!) We also have a disabled child that we bring to therapy every Friday for 2 years now but my body is still the same, flubby in the stomach and stretch marks all over because of my two beautiful kids. So this LIAR is telling me that she never got the stretch marks???? ask anyone that had babies. This picture was doctored.

@ Keengfisher

Please. I've given birth to 5 sons, including a set of twins and have NO stretch marks on my belly. I also didn't gain 100 freaking pounds either claiming I was eating for 2 full sized human beings. I'm totally with this chick. I was thin after all my kids and at 45 I still am. I don't work out, but I don't eat like a pig nor do I sit on the couch feeling sorry for myself. I stay active. I cannot believe that society is so screwed that skinny people have to apologize for not being fat! Wth???

@ Savail

Likewise, why should fat people have to apologize for being fat -- or hectored for not trying to eat healthier, exercise, and lose weight. How I live my life is none of your damn business.

@ Savail

Stretch marks are not inclusive of all pregnancies. It's a genetic luck of the draw.

@ Keengfisher

I had two kids and have noooo stretch marks on my tummy and my stomach went back to normal. I am 5'8'' and 135 and went back to my normal size w/in weeks. I am long-waisted so I carried two basketballs. It IS possible to NOT get stretch marks. Ur full of shit and baaaaad genes.

Fat people get easily offended when their fatness is called out.

@ SlowJamz

And, pray tell, why should anybody be calling out someone else for being fat? I'm fat now, yes, but that happened only after I got to be 60 years old. I also don't want people calling out that I'm bald as a way of trying to show their hirsute superiority to me. Butt out, jerk. Being a busybody or being rude is a lot worse than being bald or fat or old or ugly.

I got pissed off when I saw this picture and I'm a 22 year old female who recently motivated herself to lose 60 lbs. I saw this picture and became offended for my mom who has six kids, has worked at least 3 jobs almost all her life, made time for the gym, and ate healthy and yet never lost any weight. after years of trying to work this weight off she discovered that she had a thyroid problem and that's why she never lost any weight. I thought this picture was incredibly rude and inconsiderate because sometimes people try and it is not their fault that they can't reach their goal and with all the media focus on skinny women and whatnot this is the last thing that I feel my mother needs to see. She doesn't deserve to be taunted and neither does any other woman and that is how this picture comes off. Good for her that she was able to do all that but no one is the same and she really should have considered how others would feel upon posting this picture. It really was the caption that said "what's your excuse?" that got me so enraged.

People that are fat or obese tend to saying that everyone is fat-shaming them. I find it funny. If you're not fat you don't throw a whiny fit about it. You don't even care. I'm skinny I didn't find this shaming anyone. People are just so dumb and jealous these days. Tired of being fat? Start exercising or stop eating that fast food garbage.
