Charlie Hunnam surprised many over the weekend when he dropped out of Fifty Shades of Grey.
But at least one insider familiar with the actor says she isn't shocked Hunnam has withdrawn from the role of Christian Grey... she's shocked he ever agreed to it in the first place!
"What he was taking on with this role was not what Charlie wants in his future career," this source tells E! News.
The mole goes on to explain that this Sons of Anarchy star is content with his current stature of Hollywood. He isn't looking to become an A-lister.
"The attention and the pressure was intense. More than anything he hates attention and being in Fifty Shades of Grey would force him to do lots of media. That's really not his thing. Charlie doesn't want to be massively famous. Plus, he hates conforming and being told what to do. This role would force him to have to be something he is not."
Others have said that it wasn't the attention which caused a problem for Hunnam; it was the negative attention.
Fans of the book series on which this movie is based have been less than enthusiastic over Hunnam as Christian, with thousands even signing a petition to get him booted from the gig.
They have also been unhappy with Dakota Johnson, leading many to wonder if she'll drop out next.
Author E.L. James Tweeted the best of luck to Hunnam after the announcement was made over the weekend, while Universal Pictures and Focus Features released a joint statement that read:
"The filmmakers of Fifty Shades of Grey and Charlie Hunnam have agreed to find another male lead given Hunnam's immersive TV schedule which is not allowing him time to adequately prepare for the role of Christian Grey."
We may never know Hunnam's true reason for withdrawing, but we do know a new actor is needed for this key role.
Who should it be?
