Mom Breastfeeding 7-Month-Old, 3-Year-Old and 5-Year-Old: Too Much of a Good Thing?

by at .  Updated at . Comments

Breastfeeding three children at the same time is not for everybody, mentally or physically, but that's what Wales mother Samantha Williams proudly does.

She announced this last week, with an interesting footnote:

Only one of the three kids is a baby.

Wales Mom

Samantha is nursing her 7-month-old. Her 3-year-old. AND her 5-year-old, She uses a technique called "tandem nursing" of her baby and two older kids.

Only two can latch on at any one time, after all.

Naturally, reaction to her story was mixed. Is she a poster woman for breastfeeding? Taking it too far with the older kids? A little of both, perhaps?

Do children three and five years old, happy as they seem above, require nursing at that stage of life? Does it hold them back, rather than help them?

Regardless of the varying opinions on whether breastfeeding children until ages three and five is smart, some questioned its impact on the 7-month-old.

Is it better to have a mother whose body is working overtime for three kids in every way? Is having a mom who never gets to just shut off a benefit?

It's her choice, regarding the toll it takes on her own body, but is it fair to the kids? Spreading herself too thin has to be a concern, doesn't it?

To the folks that agree breastfeeding in public is Ok (I did it) and agree that breastfeeding a 5-year old is ok...do you believe breatfeeding a 5-year old (or older) in public us ok? Is it healthy for a school age child to be seen nursing...really?

Dirty hippies. What a surprise. Look at that little brat boy too - time to stop sucking mama's tit you little brat. And this is definitely creepy and weird. Don't give me the "other countries" excuse. I don't care if it's another Country, it's still wrong, weird, creepy and gross.

And you are a Tea Party supporter, no doubt.

Those are her children and breastfeeding is her choice. It's a common practice in other countries, so I really don't see anything wrong with it. My concern would be for the health of the mother. Hopefully she is eating well and taking care of herself physically and emotionally.

It's been proven the longer you breast feed the better and healthier your children will end up being, but I wouldn't do it till 3 and 5. 2 would probably be my max age if I was still lactating

For those who don't seem to know, women in other countries often breastfeed their children much longer than we do in the US, sometimes up until 9 or 10 years of age.

It has been proven that the child is no better off breastfeeding after 1 yr. of age.

What, in third world countries? There are a lot of incestuous thing that go on in other countries....that doesn't make it ok, you freak!

Her tits, her business, but when women do this type of thing, they're generally depleting their own body of much needed calcium for which they generally suffer from early onset of arthritis, rhumatism, etc. Also, when nursing this many for this long, I question whether the children are receiving all the calcium they need.
