The Queen has made it official, gay marriage is now legal in the UK!

The bill passed through Parliament but was waiting the Queen’s stamp of approval. Now that she’s given it, same sex couples are legally permitted to get married.

The allowance for civil partnerships has been law since 2005 but thanks to an seemingly unlikely ally, gay couples can now add marriage to their list of liberties.

David Cameron was a strong supporter of the legalization of gay marriage, without the support of many of his Conservative party colleagues.

In 2007, in a speech given at a gathering of Conservative party members, Cameron said,”There’s something special about marriage. It’s not about religion. It’s not about morality. It’s about commitment. When you stand up there, in front of your friends and family, in front of the world, whether it’s in a church or anywhere else, what you’re doing really means something.”

Six years later, those words will now be able to be realized by all citizens of the UK.
