by at .  Updated at . Comments

Despicable Me 2 is the sequel to the incredibly entertaining and adorable Despicable Me.

It brings back star voices Steve Carrell, Kristin Wiig and Russell Brand from the original movie, while adding the talents of Ken Jeong and Benjamin Bratt. But does all this star power add up to another good movie?

Let's head to the critics' reviews and see how it all shakes out!

Despicable Me 2 Poster

The scope of the 'toon espionage-adventure goings-on is surprisingly limited. But the filmmakers so clearly love working on these characters, their creative joy is infectious. - Tom Russo, Boston Globe

The original had something equally new to say about our fixation with heroes and villains. Despicable Me 2 only cares about the bottom line... and increasing it. - Bill Gibron, Film Racket

The animation is beguiling, particularly when Lucy drives her car into the ocean, transforming it into a submarine that scoots around sharks and fish. - Stephanie Merry, Washington Post

The rare animated sequel that rivals the brightness and enjoyability of its predecessor. - Mike Scott, Times-Picayune

While Despicable Me 2 isn't the most laugh-out-loud or innovative family film, its stunning animation and amusing hijinks make it worth a watch in between other summer flicks. - Max Nicholson, IGN Movies

Gru without evil doesn't have much of a personality at all. - Sean Means, Salt Lake Tribune
