Sad, difficult-to-believe news out of Brazil:

Joao Maria de Souza, a 45-year old resident of Caratinga, died last Wednesday after a cow from a nearby farm escaped… climbed on to his roof… and then fell eight feet on to de Souza’s sleeping body when the roof collapsed.

While de Souza only appeared to have fractured his leg as a result of the incident – he was reportedly awake and chatting during a ride to the hospital – he later died from internal bleeding while waiting to be seen by physicians.

“Being crushed by a cow in your bed is the last way you expect to leave this earth,” de Souza’s brother-in-law told a Brazilian newspaper, though he did not blame the tragedy on the animal:

“But in my view it wasn’t the cow that killed our Joao, it was the unacceptable time he spent waiting to be examined.”

Maria de Souza agreed, telling Brazil’s SuperCanal TV channel: “I didn’t bring my son up to be killed by a falling cow.”

Police are investigating the unfortunate, strange incident and the cow’s owner may be charged with involuntary manslaughter.
