Sebastien De La Cruz Responds to Racist Twitter Users, Takes Pride in Father

by at .  Updated at . Comments

Sebastien De La Cruz is 11 years old.

Yet the singer is clearly more mature than a handful of morons on the Internet, many of whom reacted to his national anthem performance on Tuesday by raining hate all over Twitter.

The former America's Got Talent contestant sang The Star-Spangled Banner prior to Game 3 of the NBA Finals... only to become the subject of racist Tweets that couldn't believe someone of Mexican heritage was honoring the United States.

In response, De La Cruz appeared on a Fox affiliate in San Antonio yesterday and responded to the haters.

"They don't know my life," he said. "My father was actually in the navy for a pretty long time, and I actually salute him today for that. I just wanna thank him and to be able to sing the national anthem."

"People don't know, they just assume that I'm just Mexican. But I'm not from Mexico, I'm from San Antonio, born and raised. True San Antonio Spurs fan."

The admirable young man also took to Twitter himself and wrote:

"Please do not pay attention to the negative people. I am an American living the American Dream. This is part of the American life."

Amen, Sebastien.

His parents should have made him wear something else not the mariachi outfit we are in the US so wearing something that simbolizes another country is disrespectful when you are singing the national anthem. Other than that the kid sang pretty good!

It does not show disrespect. It is just clothing. I am white and I didn't find anything wrong with what he wore. There are mariachi bands all over America and they wear the same type of outfits. What is the problem??? smh

There is a difference between singing the Star Spangled Banner and Lampooning the Star Spangled Banner. The kid crossed the line, but it was not his fault - he is a kid. I blame his parents, The San Antonio Spurs, the NBA and ABC Sports for this insult to our National Anthem.

Rosanne Barr lampooned the national anthem. Sebastian did not. Get your ears cleaned out ffs. He did a fine job of singing and showing grace. You on the other hand...not so much.

Did we watch the same telecast? He sang it really well and with feeling. He did not lampoon nor insult the national anthem. Believe me I have heard the national anthem sung waaaay worse than that!!!

Hmmm, I wonder where your inbred ancestors are from? Did you know that whites actually comprise the largest group welfare recipients?

Your comment is a sign of ignorance. It only raised a question in my head- how much schooling did you get? My assumption would be-not much! A true comment of bitterness in your part. Go back to school.
