Miss Iowa Nicole Kelly: One Arm, One Inspiring Story

by at .  Updated at . Comments

Nicole Kelly was crowned Miss Iowa last night, giving this 23-year old the chance to compete in September at the Miss America Pageant.

Why is this especially noteworthy? Because Kelly was born with only one arm.

The Keokuk native won over $10,000 in scholarship money with the win.

She graduated from the University of Nebraska in 2012 with a degree in directing and theater management and says in her official bio that her dream job is to work as a stage manager on Broadway.

Of being born without a left forearm, Kelly writes:

"As I grew older, I learned to offset the initial stares I received from people with an outgoing personality that would not give in to "No." This meant that I tried everything! From baseball, to dance to diving, there was nothing I would not try. I found my passion within a world where I was giving people permission to stare…the stage."

Kelly lists her official platform as Overcoming Disabilities, something she has done all her life, most recently via this victory.

We wish her the best of luck at Miss America.
