Twentieth Century Fox has announced a sequel to Independence Day will be released on July 3, 2015, nearly two full decades after the original made an A-lister out of Will Smith.
There's a catch, however: Smith will NOT appear in the upcoming follow-up.
"Will Smith cannot come back because he's too expensive, but he'd also be too much of a marquee name," director Roland Emmerich - who is returning to the franchise - told The New York Daily News. "It would be too much."
Emmerich added that half the film's cast may be familiar to fans of the original, while the other half will be filled with new characters.
