Danielle Powell Expelled From College For Being a Lesbian, Ordered to Repay Tuition

Danielle Powell, a former student of Grace University in Omaha, was expelled for being a lesbian last year and ordered to repay scholarship funds.

She is now organizing a petition to help raise the cash.

Grace University has refused to transfer credits earned by Danielle Powell during her three-and-a-half-year enrollment until she agrees to pay $6,300.

The amount reflects the tuition of the spring semester of 2011, when administrators first discovered her sexual orientation and removed her from courses.

The former member of the college’s volleyball team and an on-campus volunteer for the homeless was just one semester shy of graduation.

Michael James, Executive V.P. at Grace University, justified the college's actions, affirming that its student handbook forbids "sexually immoral behavior."

Quoting from the handbook, James stated that "premarital sex, adultery, and homosexual acts" all could lead to probation and/or a judiciary hearing.”

A petition started by Powell’s wife, Michelle Rogers, calls for Grace to drop its demand, which prevent Powell from transferring to another university.

It has already gained 11,200 signatures since its launch last weekend.

“I’m asking for your help in petitioning Grace University to drop tuition fees owed for the Spring Semester of 2011,” Rogers says in the petition.

“We are a young, recently married couple and this lingering debt - which Danielle should not have to pay and Grace has no right to demand - is holding her back.”

Incidentally, Danielle Powell's marriage proposal to Michelle Rogers took place at a Macklemore concert in December, and the video went viral. Watch:

No college would *state* that they kicked someone out for being gay. They would conjure up some dirt, e.g. maybe bully other students into making statements that the gay person is, basically, evil, back it up with statements from the staff, and then kick him or her out for being e.g. "abusive" or "disruptive".

If they posted that video on YouTube, they would draw more potential people to join and sign their petition. It is absurd that someone has to pay again for tuition because of her sexual orientation. You have to really keep some people out of your personal business/life.

Religion kills all common sense. Period! Thank you.

Not all religious folks agree with the way this school handled Danielle's situation. Yes,she should have been expelled. No,she should not be forced to repay her loans before she can get her credits transferred. The school should let her finish her schooling and then hit her with the bill. That'd be the Christian thing to do.

I am Christian, but don't agree with the school. However, she knew and signed the rules of the school. So if she pays her tuition, she should be allowed to transfer her credits. My son is receiving scholarships. They come with certain criteria. Some are financial and some are moral guidelines. He knows to honor them. If she was unwilling to honor their rules, then don't accept their offer of enrollment or scholarships. In the future she will have learned not to be dishonest when applying for a job, school, etc.

What we don't know is that she decided to engage in a lesbian lifestyle when she applied to that school. If not, she was not dishonest.

Non Christians. I can't stand you stuck up assholes. You all bend the word supposedly of the lord to use it to your, advantage when it suits your purpose. Jesus lived all and accepted all. Wasn't that the real way Of the Christian? Not excluding people because you have a personal bias against them. And using the damn Bible, or as I call it, the book of fairy tales. To put others down. You can take that damn Bible and shove it up your narrow minded hypocritical asses! Fuck you all.

Spoken like a true atheist. Only an atheist can post language like that and think they speak for the majority.

Did you only read the first sentence of her post and decide you wanted to post a stupid rant? Maybe you should read her post again because she says in no way, shape or form that she was against it. She said that it was in the tuition contract and that it's the girl's fault for not following the guidelines.

Which is why the young lady in question had to hide who she was in the first place. Because of thier stupid rules. Religion as a whole is destructive. Plain and simple.

Kiss my ass. I'm not trying to hear anything you say either cow.

No...she would have learned never to trust certain establishments that have an inhumane bias against other people just trying to be who they are. She had to hide who she was because of asshole Bible thumping holier than thou

Are you KIDDING me? What a bunch of 'good' Christians these people are. 'We WILL wreck retribution on you if you don't act as WE say...forget GOD...it's US that decides!'

While I think the expulsion bad, if it's written in the handbook and it's a Christian school then I think she should have chosen another college.

What even the non-Christians here should be able to acknowledge is that as soon as she realized she could not live by the contract she signed with that school, she should've left. Also,if she signed that contract knowing she was a practicing lesbian, she never should've done that. She should've chosen a tolerant school. I still think the school dealt with her too harshly though. It should've just transferred her credits to another school without making her pay her loan in full first. That's just mean.

Im a Christian and I feel the school is wrong. At the same time she did lie and I think expelling would have been the only punishment that is fair. Unless they have proof she was doing it to mock what they stand for. Then that would come off as fraud to me.

@ lynn

After reading it over. I still think the college is being cruel. She earned her scholarship

Really? Go to a Christian college and then admit you're gay? You asked for this when you went to a Christian college and signed to abide by their honor code. This is dumb,

sorry, but the rules were spelled out!!! she could have gone to another college anywhere.....tired of gays trying to make a statement & cram it down everyones throat...pony up the $$$$$'s, repeat the semester, get on with your life cause we just plain don't care who your f-ing, but don't break the rules cause then someone can come along & say be a pediphile or something & they could say well you made an exception for this girl....there are lots of rules & laws i don't like but i am bound to unless they are legally changed & if I can't get an exception to them then why the hell should you....cause your gay? thats a choice not a disability...so honor the committment you made to the rules & quit whining about it!

@ Milliann+Johnson

You were doing pretty good until you said being gay is a choice. It is not. Folks are born gay. Anyway, even if being gay was a choice, who in the hell would choose to go through the hell gays go through? Think about it.
