Mike Jeffries, Abercrombie & Fitch CEO: NO FAT CHICKS!

by at .  Updated at . Comments

Abercrombie & Fitch CEO Mike Jeffries has raised eyebrows by allegedly saying that his popular clothing brand, essentially, does not cater to fat people.

Speaking with Business Insider, Robin Lewis, co-author of The New Rules of Retail, claimed that Jeffries "doesn't want larger people shopping in his store."

"He only wants thin and beautiful people," he said. He doesn't want his core customers to see people who aren't as hot as them wearing his clothing."

"People who wear his clothing should feel like they're one of the 'cool kids.'"

A rep for the company did not immediately respond for comment, but Lewis' supposed interpretation of the A&F philosophy has gotten a lot of pick-up.

What "cool kids" might Lewis be referring to? Not fat kids, that's for sure.

Business Insider pointed to a previous interview Jeffries gave to Salon.

"In every school there are the cool and popular kids, and then there are the not-so-cool kids. Candidly, we go after the cool kids," the clothing CEO explained.

"We go after the attractive all-American kid with a great attitude and a lot of friends. A lot of people don't belong [in our clothes], and they can't belong."

"Are we exclusionary? Absolutely. The companies that are in trouble are trying to target everybody: young, old, fat, skinny. But then you become totally vanilla."

"You don't alienate anybody, but you don't excite anybody, either."

Jeffries' quotes certainly shed light on Abercrombie & Fitch ads, which are frequently risque and tend to feature extremely thin, attractive models.

Yet it's not clear how much Lewis' comments reflect his own interpretation of A&F and how much they accurately reflected the brand's actual approach.

It that is any sort of official company position, though, it's clearly going to alienate a lot of people in the U.S. ... but then again, does he really care?

The cool kids will probably still shop there.

the man is clearly a tit..... since when has thin defined beautiful?? It's no good having a size zero body and a face that would frighten the general public so the man is clearly a pillock!

Your being judge mental now. You say it's no good to have a size zero body and a face that would frighten the public?? Your so wrong... Your no better than this guy. I'm a double zero and I have a 4year old son. Im a model.. So what does that tell you. So quit being judge mental.

A double zero is very very small. And it shows that you have to be a double zero to model? that hypocritical considering most people in america are over weight. I agree wit carol the image that would bring is bad considering most ppl are not a healthy double zero.

So we have started a real girls in A&F clothing parody. More women and men who are not "cool kids" size, should post pictures of themselves in A&F clothing. Please help us reach 100 likes by 5PM today, Pacific time. https://www.facebook.com/RealG...

Has anyone seen Mike Jeffries. He's not hot any more plastic surgery and his face could crumble. I am only one parent but my daughter will not wear anymore of the clothing line. He is bullying people. A good thing to do would be to hand flyers in front of the stores with this story on. People may or may not boycott it. But they have the right to know what a douche he is.

This is just like FUBU( For Us By Us). They never liked white people wearing their cheap clothes. I love Hollister and A&F. I see a lot of people older, younger, thin, and bigger wearing hollister and A&F... So I'm not sure why this man is saying this. This is just ridiculous I think, people should be able to wear whatever they like and not be judged. This man is a complete idiot for saying this.

Actually FUBU wanted everyone to wear their clothes. You don't make money by exclusion. The FUBU (For Us By Us) label was because of the discriminatory practice of clothing manufacturers, designers, etc. It's kind of like when Hilfiger started and everyone was saying he didn't want Black Americans wearing his clothing...well, actually he didn't want rappers and hip hop artists wearing his clothing, thus promoting it for urban youths. That was just ridiculous! He made a lot...and I mean A LOT...of money because of rappers, etc. wearing his clothes.

Are u serious! The beginnings of fashion wouldn't allow black women or men to either walk the catwalk or show their lines. When FUBU came around, it was more of a line that showed African Americans that we WERE capable to producing popular and sought after clothing. Fashion excluded blacks FOREVER. Abercrombie and Fitch never wanted blacks modeling or working with their clothing until a class action law suit was brought against them. I swear white folks are the first ones to run to attacking FUBU even though most things in American society were always EXCLUSIVE of blacks!

I'm never shopping there again that's just discouraging that someone could say something like that. I have people in my family that are not the smallest in the world. They have serious health problems that they can't help. I used to be bigger than what I am and was excited when I could start shopping in stores for smaller sizes, but sure as hell not shopping for anything there again.... Very upset by a comment like that.

So now he's a bully!!!! I have 4 grandchildren and I always purchase clothes for them.......one brand that I will stay away from..and every parent should boycott this company.. I am not say that obesity is good, but there are some people that have a hard time keeping weight off. Everyone has a different body type....These actors and singers some are so thin if they turn sideways they disappear....THIS IS NOT ACCEPTABLE,

First of all im a skinny girl with nothing against fat people. How rude is that theres obese people that are super fat because of thyroid problems they cant help it at all. Maybe some people do really need to get educated on medical subjects. Im pretty sure theres at least one fat person in their family or friends. Not buying from this store ever again!!!
