Mike Jeffries, Abercrombie & Fitch CEO: NO FAT CHICKS!

Abercrombie & Fitch CEO Mike Jeffries has raised eyebrows by allegedly saying that his popular clothing brand, essentially, does not cater to fat people.

Speaking with Business Insider, Robin Lewis, co-author of The New Rules of Retail, claimed that Jeffries "doesn't want larger people shopping in his store."

"He only wants thin and beautiful people," he said. He doesn't want his core customers to see people who aren't as hot as them wearing his clothing."

"People who wear his clothing should feel like they're one of the 'cool kids.'"

A rep for the company did not immediately respond for comment, but Lewis' supposed interpretation of the A&F philosophy has gotten a lot of pick-up.

What "cool kids" might Lewis be referring to? Not fat kids, that's for sure.

Business Insider pointed to a previous interview Jeffries gave to Salon.

"In every school there are the cool and popular kids, and then there are the not-so-cool kids. Candidly, we go after the cool kids," the clothing CEO explained.

"We go after the attractive all-American kid with a great attitude and a lot of friends. A lot of people don't belong [in our clothes], and they can't belong."

"Are we exclusionary? Absolutely. The companies that are in trouble are trying to target everybody: young, old, fat, skinny. But then you become totally vanilla."

"You don't alienate anybody, but you don't excite anybody, either."

Jeffries' quotes certainly shed light on Abercrombie & Fitch ads, which are frequently risque and tend to feature extremely thin, attractive models.

Yet it's not clear how much Lewis' comments reflect his own interpretation of A&F and how much they accurately reflected the brand's actual approach.

It that is any sort of official company position, though, it's clearly going to alienate a lot of people in the U.S. ... but then again, does he really care?

The cool kids will probably still shop there.

Funny to see how such a butt ugly, overdone plastic surgery moron could pass judgement on others?? Does he think he's one of the cool people? LOL!!! I think not. I predict that in the next 10 years his face falls off. If my daughter saw this man in one of his stores, I'm sure it would send her and the rest running out of the store screaming!! Gosh, I hate people who don't think before they speak!

Every A&F store I have been in smells like BO. Never bought anything though. Didn't feel cool enough.

Oh A&F, why do you still exist? Why do you insist on corrupting generation after generation of the American youth, turning them into little nancy boys who are more concerned about plucking every hair from their body and keeping little bottoms that can squeeze into skinny jeans, than they are with their future? I recall you having a very... "Unique" image when I was young, and it was far from what was "Cool"

I never shopped there even when I was a trim teenager because it was far too expensive. But, let him sell his clothes to whoever he wants, who cares! I never saw them as trendy, they look like beachy hippie clothes!

It's sad that in the year 2013 we can't celebrate peoples differences. Instead, we put labels on one another to segregate one another weight wide, age wise etc. But it's like I always say, there's a very special place in hell for people like that guy. As well as many others like them....and I truly believe that jim is going to hell with Gasoline draws and socks on! LoL!

Random LA Suburbanite Explains why She Hates CEO Of Abercrombie and Fitch: Dear Mike Jeffries, Abercrombie & Fitch CEO, As an adult whose adolescence was riddled with days of self-starvation, whose colds lasted weeks because the caloric content of Dayquil wasn’t worth health, who accidently and unknowingly buckled to the image standard you personally and directly set in our society, I now have no choice but to let it all hang out. I have sucked it in long enough and I have pulled the finger from the back of my throat and I am pointing it at you. I hate you because you are not funny, clever, creative, smart, revolutionary, inspiring, or motivating. You are a chauvinistic asshole who gets off on the artificiality of status quo and the worthlessness of childhood popularity; you are a grown fucking man who thrives and profits in the name of kids leaning over toilet bowls and hanging by their necks from extension cords in their basements because their soul exists in a body whose shape deviates from what you personally think is attractive. You carry larger sizes for men to accommodate their muscles and not for women because women cannot be athletes. I hate you because you prey upon lost souls longing for a sense of fulfillment and instead of celebrating diversity and life and existence, you stifle and extinguish them. I hate you because you judge the innocent and twist their minds. I hate you because you did that to me. I hate you because you reverse everything that every good person is trying to teach the next generation: that a good heart and morals and goals and intelligence is what makes a person, and that a person is not confined to the number on the tag on the inside of their acid washed shorts. If your goal is, as you have so bombastically and publically articulated, to create a label of clothing that only attractive people can wear, then fucking design a line of scrubs because in your hour of need, the skilled and confident and talented doctor with the 32 inch waist will not discriminate as she does everything she can to keep your cold and lonely heart beating... unless I become a doctor, in which case, I make no promises. Sincerely Yours, Victoria Sayeg

Well said!

@ VictoriaSayeg

I don't know who you are but...AMEN TO THAT SISTER! ;-) it's about time someone truly told it like it is...well done.

@ My Two Cents.....

Best. Fucking. Letter. EVER! So well said and thought out! Truly remarkable!

He's very ugly... maybe he should sell his stores to someone more good looking...... a better person in general would help too....

In other words, he never said he didn't want fat people wearing A&F! Of course they want their brand to be seen as cool - how is that shocking for a clothing brand which targets youngsters? Robin Lewis is either projecting or has a massive chip on his shoulder.

@ Fola

I don't know if A&F's image has changed recently, but when I was a young lad, it was seen as something of a Gay Sex palace and subject to frequent parody. (To quote a Comedian whose name slips my mind "When you walk inside you feel like a Unicorn with a dick for a horn that cums rainbows is going to run out of the closet, on it's back the ghost of Andy Worhol is going to be fucking the ghost of Oscar Wild") But perhaps that is the "cool" he is going for?

soooo, he can't shop at his own store?

Do they sell bags at A&F? With a face as ugly as that of Mike Jeffries I wonder if he's allowed in his own store. Is it considered cool to butcher a face like that with all those little nip and tuck
