Mike Jeffries, Abercrombie & Fitch CEO: NO FAT CHICKS!

by at .  Updated at . Comments

Abercrombie & Fitch CEO Mike Jeffries has raised eyebrows by allegedly saying that his popular clothing brand, essentially, does not cater to fat people.

Speaking with Business Insider, Robin Lewis, co-author of The New Rules of Retail, claimed that Jeffries "doesn't want larger people shopping in his store."

"He only wants thin and beautiful people," he said. He doesn't want his core customers to see people who aren't as hot as them wearing his clothing."

"People who wear his clothing should feel like they're one of the 'cool kids.'"

A rep for the company did not immediately respond for comment, but Lewis' supposed interpretation of the A&F philosophy has gotten a lot of pick-up.

What "cool kids" might Lewis be referring to? Not fat kids, that's for sure.

Business Insider pointed to a previous interview Jeffries gave to Salon.

"In every school there are the cool and popular kids, and then there are the not-so-cool kids. Candidly, we go after the cool kids," the clothing CEO explained.

"We go after the attractive all-American kid with a great attitude and a lot of friends. A lot of people don't belong [in our clothes], and they can't belong."

"Are we exclusionary? Absolutely. The companies that are in trouble are trying to target everybody: young, old, fat, skinny. But then you become totally vanilla."

"You don't alienate anybody, but you don't excite anybody, either."

Jeffries' quotes certainly shed light on Abercrombie & Fitch ads, which are frequently risque and tend to feature extremely thin, attractive models.

Yet it's not clear how much Lewis' comments reflect his own interpretation of A&F and how much they accurately reflected the brand's actual approach.

It that is any sort of official company position, though, it's clearly going to alienate a lot of people in the U.S. ... but then again, does he really care?

The cool kids will probably still shop there.

This guy is being an idiot and an asshole, If you hate fat people then don't share it to the press. A&F must have the worst PR team to not have even tried to stop him

You want him to lie? You're fucking stupid. FAT PEOPLE ARE DISGUSTING AND UNNATURAL.

It's bad business. He is going to lose a ton of customers because of this. Also, back in the day, having weight on you meant you were wealthy.

LOL!!! Wow this is just plain sad. He obviously wants his business to lose income with comments like that. I don't know why anyone would pay money for their clothes anyways. Its the same thing over and over again. Its plain, with no design. Hollister offers the same products for a bit of a cheaper price. No sir, not stepping into this store again. I'm surprised the strong ass cologne and perfume doesn't repel people away.

Hollister isn't any better because they're all technically the same company. I've worked for both years ago (I regret it now that I've read this), but we should boycott the whole franchise which includes Hollister, Abercrombie kids, A&F and Gilly Hicks!! Because if we only boycott A&F, he's still going to profit elsewhere!

After reading this, I threw everything from that store that I owned and threw it away. They are basically telling us that to be "cool" we have to be skinny. Alot of people suffer from eating disorders because of stuff like this. What does this tell a young teen? That to be "cool" you should starve yourself or purge? This is NOT ok. That man has NO right to judge anyone for being "ugly" especially when he has a hideous personality. His company is not worth my buisness or any buisness at all.

I know he's 68, but his face looks like the side of a house

IWhen my chldren were younger they shopped at AF - I would not spend a dime there after your remarks - Shame on you - You may fit in your clothes, but please wear a bag over your head - your plastic surgeon should be sued!

The CEO has no idea about the teens that are buying clothes these days. Most of the teens that I have spoken too, say that they would not wear A&F clothes. When I went into the store to look around because as he says the beautiful people only shop in their stores. I did not find beautiful people selling the clothes. What I did find was a bunch of kids who could not get themselves out of a paper bag, let alone run a cash register. A& F needs to rethink their position on their clothing and use teens that are in society. The CEO is not a brilliant man by any means, his insecurity is written like a sign across is face.
Beware of such individuals, protest his speech. The truth shall be told.

LOL. You should see the hiring process the put people through and how picky they are about that as well. This guy is a fucking piece of shit, that's all there is about it. If enough people avoid shopping there, he will be out of a job and the company will be forced into a takeover. All I can say the stores spray toxic fumes into the air that you can smell from about 100 yards away, and has been the no.1 reason I stopped shopping there in years. Just avoid his stores, protest them, and make his comments national known and run him out of business. He's a fucking retard anyways!! Look this guy up, LOL....

Basement life at moms getting dull? Must be if you have nothing better to do than insult people you cannot see or know.

I am 5'4" tall and weigh 185 lbs and Ive always thought A&F clothing looked hideous. Size doesn't always mean beauty, its people like YOU that give young girls eating disorders. It's people like you that make a young girl/boy go as far as taking dangerous weight loss pills or even take their own life. Also, do you know what country this is? This is the country that has an "obesity epidemic" where the average size person is between a 112&16. Remember that when you're out of business, starving and FINALLY able to fit your own cliche "average lonely teen" clothing.

I would hate to think my daughter needed to be a size 2 to be popular or cool! She's a very happy, healthy teenager with plenty of friends. The only thing we own that is A&F is hand me downs from family or friends. (I may just burn them!) I would rather shop at Family Dollar than buy from A&F! I myself shop at walmart & would rather my money keep going to China than this man!
