He won't be dealing with any oversized mushrooms, but Antonio Banderas has landed the role of Super Mario in The 33.
The upcoming film will focus on the amazing true story of 33 Chilean miners who were trapped underground for 69 days in 2010.
Production will begin this fall with a release date some time in 2014 and Banderas is on board as Mario Sepulveda, who came to be known as known as “Super Mario” throughout the scary adventure.
Rodrigo Santoro will be playing Florencio, the first miner to surface in the rescue, while Martin Sheen will also star and Patricia Riggen will direct.
Producer Mike Medavoy made the announcement of Banderas in the lead role at the Cannes Film Festival yesterday and it has reportedly been approved by the brave men actually involved in this incident.
