The rumors are now an awkward reality for NBC:

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Jimmy Fallon has signed a deal to replace Jay Leno as host of The Tonight Show.

Of course, NBC itself is yet to publicly comment on this shake-up, even though Leno continually slams executives in his monologue and even though he and sang a duet with Fallon on Monday that acknowledged the chatter.

Leno’s contract is up in September 2014.

The network wants this long-time host and extremely unfunny comedian to announce his retirement this May, with Fallon taking over some time next year.

Seth Meyers is then the leading candidate to replace Fallon at 12:35 a.m., but insiders also say Joel McHale is a possibility.

No matter what happens, this much is clear: NBC has once again handled a talk show transition in the most sloppy way possible.
