Adam Levy - a Putnam County District Attorney and the son of television's Judge Judy - stands accused of interfering in the case of Alexandru Hossu, a suspect in the rape of a 12-year old girl.
Levy has recused himself from the investigation because Hossu is his personal trainer and former roommate, but Sheriff Donald Smith says shady business is still taking place:
"He is apparently trying to influence and affect the investigation, which could be perceived as an ethical violation of his official duties and perhaps even as an attempt to undermine it."
Levy responded Monday that these are "unfounded allegations and misstatements," as he and the sheriff's office have reportedly been clashing for months.
Hossu was arrested last week and charged with twice raping a 12-year old girl in 2010. She only just came forward with that information.
Levy admits his family has known the suspect "for years" and, although he did recuse himself from the case, Smith says another attorney made that decision for Levy and that Levy talking about the issue reveals "ongoing and improper involvement."
"In my view, Mr. Levy's comments and actions would seem to suggest that, if he could have his own way, Mr. Hossu would never have been brought to justice for his crime and Mr. Levy's relationship with him would never have been brought to the light of public scrutiny," the sheriff said.
He added that the attorney was attempting to distract the public "from what this case is really about: the vicious rape of a little girl by a man whom he housed and hired as his personal fitness trainer."
