Jodie Foster Comes Out (Indirectly) in Moving Golden Globes Speech

Jodie Foster left some people bewildered, others in tears and everyone rived with a long, wide-ranging and emotional speech at the 2013 Golden Globes.

Honored with the Cecil B. DeMille Award for lifetime achievement Sunday, the actress, 50, addressed everything from her sexuality to her ailing mother.

"While I'm here being all confessional, I guess I just have just a sudden urge to say something that I've never really been able to air in public," she said.

"[It's] a declaration that I'm a little nervous about - but maybe not quite as nervous as my publicist right now. I'm just going to put it out there - loud and proud."

After a short hesitation and plea for support, she said: "I am single."

The camera panned to Jodie Foster's rarely-seen sons smiling.

"This is not going to be a big coming out speech tonight because I already did my coming out about a thousand years ago back in the stone age."

"In those very quaint days when a fragile girl would open up to trusted friends and family and coworkers and then gradually proudly to everyone who knew her."

"Apparently now I'm told that every celebrity is expected to honor the details of their private life with a press conference, a fragrance and a primetime reality show."

Foster, who criticized the media for its treatment of Kristen Stewart this summer, spoke candidly - and a little bit pointedly - about her desire for privacy.

"If you had to fight for a life that felt real and honest and normal against all odds, than maybe you too would value privacy above all else," she said.

Noting that she'd been a working actress for 47 years, the youngest-ever recipient of the award then added, "isn't that reality show enough?"

She continued, confidently, thanking her "heroic co-parent, my ex partner in love, but righteous soul sister in life. My confessor ... most beloved BFF of 20 years, Cydney Bernard."

"Thank you so much, Cyd. I am so proud of our modern family, our amazing sons, Charlie and Kit who are my reason to breathe and to evolve."

Foster and Bernard parted ways a few years ago after a very long-term relationship, but this was the first time she'd addressed her sexuality ... ever.

As if coming out (if you can call it that) as a lesbian wasn't significant enough, she then spoke about her apparently ailing mom, bringing the audience to tears.

"I love you, I love you, I love you and I hope if I say this three times, it will magically and perfectly enter into your soul, fill you with grace and the joy of knowing that you did good in this life," she said.

"You're a great mom. Please take that with you when you're finally okay to go."

It also appeared to be a retirement announcement at one point, but Foster said later she was referring to a different phase of her life - not quite as literally.

What did you think of Jodie Foster's emotional speech?

Jodie has a relationship with Mel that we are not privy too, so I will make no judgment about her support of him. I sure was crying right along with a lot of the audience during her speech. Her passion for her family, friends and work came flying out of the screen. I love Kristen and was so proud when Jodie came to her defence last summer asking people to show some kindness and respect her privacy. I hope Kristen was watching. Jodie is a very loyal friend and Kris is lucky to have her.

Jodie has always be one of my all-time favorite actresses and even though her speech went a little askew, but it was still heartfelt and poignant. Hell, it had me misty. Anyways I hope that she doesn't completely quit acting because I do enjoy her work.
And good for her for coming out and also paying tribute to both her mother and former partner in crime. Class act all the way.

With her word-salad psychobabble, Foster once again proves herself one of the creepiest crackpots in Hollyweird.
