Adam Lanza's Hard Drive: Removed, Smashed, Likely Unsalvageable

by at . Comments

What is on Adam Lanza's hard drive? It looks like we may never find out.

Before Friday’s elementary school shooting in Newtown, Conn., the 20-year-old allegedly removed his computer disk drive and smashed it, according to The Hartford Courant.

Lanza

It will be difficult to recover any data, authorities and tech experts say.

Two sources told the paper the hard drive was “broken in pieces.” ABC News reports it “appeared to have been badly damaged with a hammer or screwdriver.”

Forensic electronics experts at the FBI will examine the drive in an effort to determine with whom Lanza corresponded electronically and how he otherwise used the device.

Tech experts also say Adam Lanza may have “overwritten the drive.”

FBI electronics experts will continue to examine the drive to see what is salvageable, but any insight into the mind of the Connecticut shooter may be lost forever.

Meanwhile, more details about the gunman are slowly emerging. And under a cloud of national mourning, a renewed debate about gun control is heating up.

A former director of security for Newtown Public Schools, Richard Novia said Lanza had Asperger’s syndrome, based on documents and discussions with Lanza’s mother.

Nancy Lanza was murdered by Adam shortly before the Sandy Hook massacre; he is believed to have used three guns, all registered in her name.

Novia said as part of his job, which he left in 2008, he would be informed of students who might pose problems to themselves or others for whatever reason.

Russ Hanoman, a friend of Lanza’s mother, previously told CNN that Lanza had Asperger’s syndrome and that he was “very withdrawn emotionally.”

But CNN has not been able to independently confirm whether Lanza had autism or Asperger’s syndrome, a higher-functioning form of autism.

Both are developmental disorders, not mental illnesses.

Many experts say neither Asperger’s nor autism can be blamed for the rampage, and saying his parents should have seen warning signs is highly debatable.

“There is absolutely no evidence or any reliable research that suggests a linkage between autism and planned violence,” the Autism Society said in a statement.

“To imply or suggest that is wrong and is harmful to more than 1.5 million law-abiding, nonviolent and wonderful individuals who live with autism each day.”

Okay let's keep making excuses. There is no way that as a parent IF something is wrong with your child it's undetectable. Keep in touch parents, keep in touch.

Either he was influenced by the alphabet agencies to destroy evidence from his communication with them or somebody other than him are covering tracks of involvement .This has false flag and mind control by use of psychotropic drugs written all over it.He was not of age to even have a gun or permit, and basically these weapons were stolen from his mother, clearly NOT the work of an upstanding law abiding ,legal gun toting ,responsible ,GOD fearing person.

Persons with true beliefs in the words of God and Jesus do not commit this kind of evil.
The 'Gun' does not kill. BELIEFS motivates killing.
Many and our government are denigrating Christian principles. People are turning into selfish and lawless "me" people. Because there are few
"Punishments" (babies thru adults)... People BELIVE they can do ANYTHING THEY LIKE.
WAKE-UP AMERICA !

Stop bringing your religion into this. For the last fucking time, this country may be run by Christians, but it does not belong to Christians. I'm a Pantheist. Generally speaking, we are probably the most warm-hearted souls in this country. We love and we practice it. Christianity is barbaric, has taken many lives, and sapped many minds. Stop feeding the rest of the country your bullshit. This was a mental illness and a parenting problem, coming from somebody with bipolar disorder. Unfortunately, this could have been prevented and those kids could still be alive if his mom had the aptitude to call authorities and put him in a straight-jacket early on and if there never have had access of weapons in that home. They are both to blame, and the only real victims are those 26 that were shot to death.

Did the son and the mother have a sexual relationship? Why did he shoot her in her bed? Why did he objectify children?

That info is rong,my wife works with kids with autism and she's gotten hit many times, most have no emotions.the mother is blame for teaching her autistic son to shoot.breaks my heart all those people died!!

Articles states that there a 1.5 million law abiding people with autism and that it is wrong to suggest or imply a link between the two is wrong, to which I agree but there are over 80 million registered gun owners in the U.S. who are also law abiding and good members of society. Lets not jump to impede anyone's rights because of one bad egg.

Sometimes you can retrieve the platters within the drive and removed then installed in a new hard drive assembly.... it would take a specialist to do this and I hope they find one. It depends on the condition of the platters.

@ Carol B.

The platters are what sounds like are smashed, I cant imagine the enclosure being broken into pieces. There will be no way in hell they will recover any data I assure you this, with those platters broken the filesystem will never be rebuilt and we will never know what or who he was cooresponding with. There have been reports though of him posting on a popular imageboard bragging about what he was going to do previous to friday at 9am.

@ Expert

The platters definitely don't need to be intact in order to retrieve data. In the early 90s I worked for a company where a manager embezzled a large sum of money over several years, and when he realized he was about to get caught, he cracked open his harddrive and smashed the platter with a hammer. They sent it off to a data retrieval company and found enough info to have him tracked down and arrested. The combo of overwriting the drive multiple times with random data, and then destroying the platter is the most effective - although I read an article in WIRED magazine that said a UK intelligence agency has their harddrives shredded and incinerated because it was the only sure way.

I haven't heard anyone talk about proper gun responsibility. The article mentions all 3 firearms were registered to his mother. Why were they, and their ammunition so accessible? Especially with a troubled, developmentally challenged son around? Violent video games, violent lyrics, regular television share a very minute responsibility in this. Proper gun ownership saves lives.
