More like the states aren't asking for permission to secede. If you read those another way it's basically saying "if we want to secede, we will. we're just petitioning you not to attack us after we do". Its in the texas state constitution that they can withdraw from the union at any time should they so choose. Whether or not the US will attack them to get the land back is another story entirely.

Does anyone really thin the federal government is going to allow any state to succeed without paying out part of the Federal deficit? It's like a divorce-you get half the property and half the bills. Stupid idea anyway. The reason Texas is in the union now is they went broke as a republic and the US bailed them out. THINK FOR YOURSELVES PEOPLE. FOX and CBS slant the news the way they want to.
