Gabby Douglas' Hair Sparks Debate: Why?

by at . Comments

American teenager Gabby Douglas has been wowing the world with grace, style, and of course, the women's all-around gymnastics gold medal.

Nevertheless, much of the chatter on social media and online platforms has been about the upkeep of her hair, and not all feedback is positive.

Douglas, one of the few African-American gymnasts ever to compete in the Olympics and the first to win all-around gold, is an inspiring story.

Time and Sports Illustrated have her on their covers. President Barack Obama called to congratulate her. So why do people care about Gabby Douglas' hair?!

“I love how she’s doing her thing and winning,’’ says 22-year-old Latisha Jenkins of Detroit told The Daily Beast. “But I just hate the way her hair looks."

"With all those pins and gel ... I wish someone could have helped her make it look better since she’s being seen all over the world."

"She representing for black women everywhere.’’

According to reports, the 4'11" Douglas appears to have chemically relaxed natural hair, to which she adds a human-hair ponytail for height.

The Olympic champ then apparently slicks it all back with a heavy layer of gel to help it stay in place during her high-energy performances.

Hair has always been something of a hot button issue for African-American women culturally, but in the case of Douglas, isn't the criticism a little much?

Douglas’ accomplishments speak for themselves ... for the conversation to turn to a teenager’s physical appearance and upkeep seems a bit unfair.

Do you like her hair? Does it matter? Tell us what you think.

She is a gorgeous young lady, what is the big deal about her hair? If she is comfortable with it so, let her be... im sure if she had to worry about some wig or fake ass piece falling off her head she wouldn't have done as good. She likes it natural and she should be accepted as is. Its too bad that too many women of African descent feel they have to put some piece on their head for they to feel beautiful.

I can't believe people are talking about her hair, personally I don't see anything wrong with it. She can wear her hair how ever she wants, who are you to say anything about her hair? This society is f'ed up. She is representing our country and she is very talented! That's all that matters. This shows how stupid people are and only want to criticize others for anything they can come up with. Stop with the stupidity and shallowness.

who cares what your hair looks like? I'm more impressed by all the awesome accomplishments the girl has made. That in itself speaks for the "people" she represents. I think she's doing an excellent job representing me as an American! 'Nuf said.

I feel bad for everyone affected by this. It shocked me to hear of Kristen's mistake, but who doesn't make mistakes. I hope if they trully love each other they can work things out. I understand trust will be a big issue but faith can always help out. Be strong, Rob and Kristen, whatever paths your lives take.

Who ever made that comment - grow up, who care's. She is beautiful! Thank you little one, good luck!

People will find any little thing to bring down something so positive. Like commentor below said, we are very superficial as a society and need to realize that it doesn't matter what somebody looks like, its what they do that makes them who they are. To bring any kind of criticism to this young girl who just overcame all odds and fulfilled her dreams is just ridiculous and rude. I wonder what the person who brought up this topic looks like!?!? The person who brought this up should be paraded in front of the media so we can critique every little thing about that person... I can guarantee that person is FAR from perfect!

Shows how shallow we are as a society.. and why is it that everytime a black person is seen in a national spotlight they are representing all African-Americans? She is representing HERSELF and nobody else. If she wants to where her hair like that she can. This is not a beauty contest. It's gymnastics. People always seem to loose focus of what's truly important.

You are the best! I never noticed anything wrong with your hair-I noticed that big smile that lites up the world-KEEP SMILING!

Is it really so important to comment about her hair? We're watching the Olympic games not a fashion show, I've seen another athlete, if I'm not mistaken in judo, which her hair was all over the place, at least Gabby's hair was kept tidy throughout her performances, and with a performance like she gave, you really won't even notice what color her hair was let alone the style!
