Gabby Douglas' Hair Sparks Debate: Why?

by at . Comments

American teenager Gabby Douglas has been wowing the world with grace, style, and of course, the women's all-around gymnastics gold medal.

Nevertheless, much of the chatter on social media and online platforms has been about the upkeep of her hair, and not all feedback is positive.

Douglas, one of the few African-American gymnasts ever to compete in the Olympics and the first to win all-around gold, is an inspiring story.

Time and Sports Illustrated have her on their covers. President Barack Obama called to congratulate her. So why do people care about Gabby Douglas' hair?!

“I love how she’s doing her thing and winning,’’ says 22-year-old Latisha Jenkins of Detroit told The Daily Beast. “But I just hate the way her hair looks."

"With all those pins and gel ... I wish someone could have helped her make it look better since she’s being seen all over the world."

"She representing for black women everywhere.’’

According to reports, the 4'11" Douglas appears to have chemically relaxed natural hair, to which she adds a human-hair ponytail for height.

The Olympic champ then apparently slicks it all back with a heavy layer of gel to help it stay in place during her high-energy performances.

Hair has always been something of a hot button issue for African-American women culturally, but in the case of Douglas, isn't the criticism a little much?

Douglas’ accomplishments speak for themselves ... for the conversation to turn to a teenager’s physical appearance and upkeep seems a bit unfair.

Do you like her hair? Does it matter? Tell us what you think.

Here we go again! WOW JUST WOW! This so-called "debate" about Gabrielle's hair is such a non-issue. Black women obsess, pay way too much for their hair "fix" and still are attempting to keep up with the Jone's if you will. Over processed hair, too much weave and most are looking like "Tranny's. Stop it already when are we going to focus on the Big Picture? In this case a 16 year old girl that has just completed a phenomenal feat in history! AND we are discussing the condition of her hair! LADIES SHE IS NOT WE ARE NOT OUR HAIR? HAVE SOME CLASS!!

This is to charlotte, re: "She looks good for planting cotton.........are her parents that cheap that she puts $1.00 clips in her hair???" What a HATEFUL thing to say! You are obviously not half the gracious, lovely young lady that Gabby Douglas is. You should hope to have her character one day.

As I see it, all of the gymnasts use tons of gel. Why shouldn't she? She's adorable, and talented and a gold medalist! Leave her alone!

For those that are still making comments about her hair, even here. Did you ever stop to think that maybe she couldn't afford to get a 'touch up". Her mother is on the verge of filing bankruptcy again and hasn't even been able to pay the coaches. Her family has struggled so much to support her dream, their dream.

I feel so bad for Gabby. She and her family have worked so hard for this. And when she goes to see what is being said about her on the internet...it's about"not getting her hair done". Have any of these people ever seen a gymnastic competition? All the girls use pins and ponytails. It's not a 'look at my hair" competition. Gee, she makes history and gets this kind of reaction. What does that say about people who put that much emphasis on hair and not the fact she made history by being the first Afriacn American to win all-around.
