Bret Easton Ellis Calls Openly Gay Matt Bomer "Ludicrous" Pick For Fifty Shades of Grey

by at . Comments

Bret Easton Ellis may be no longer under consideration to write the Fifty Shades of Grey screenplay, but he's still making his opinions about it known.

Namely, he says it would be "ludicrous" to cast a gay actor - specifically Matt Bomer - as Christian Grey in the film because of his sexuality.

The openly gay Bomer (White Collar, Magic Mike) is considered by some people to be a perfect Christian based on his looks and acting ability.

It's to say Ellis, 48, who raised eyebrows last year by calling Glee a puddle of HIV, is not one of those people angling for Matt to be cast.

Ellis insists he is not discriminating on grounds of sexual orientation, but unabashedly believes Bomer is a bad choice. He wrote on Twitter.

"Okay. Let's finalise this ... Matt Bomer is totally hot and a very good actor. He is NOT right for Christian Grey and it complicates the role."

"I don't care how good an actor you are but being married to another man complicates things for playing CG."

"This is NOT about discrimination. It's about an intensely straight actor wanting absolutely to screw Ana Steele."

"Fifty Shades of Grey: the most popular book on the planet having Matt Bomer - a gay actor - play Christian Grey is absolutely ludicrous. Why?"

"Okay I'll say it. Matt Bomer isn't right for Christian Grey because he is openly gay. He's great for other roles but this is too big a game."

"And I think if Matt Bomer wants the role which I doubt the international press tour will be an embarrassing fiasco. He's not CG. Never."

"I am NOT discriminating Matt Bomer because of his sexuality. Fifty Shades of Grey demands an actor that is genuinely into women. Get it?!?"

"I actually think it's cool that women want Matt Bomer as Christian Grey. It means that we've moved beyond stereotypes and that gay is hot."

"I think Matt Bomer is incredibly handsome and a good actor but I think he comes off totally gay in White Collar. And that is why no to CG."

NOTE: The role has not been cast, but Bomer (like the Vampire Diaries' Ian Somerhalder) is frequently discussed as a possible casting choice.

It's unclear if enough readers even know who he is, or care that he's gay, to influence their perception of his character and on-screen chemistry.

As a professional actor he could probably sell it, but opinions will likely vary on how well. As for why Ellis is ranting about it ... who knows.

What do you think of Ellis' comments? And do you think Bomer would make a good CG? Sound off in the comments - and in the poll - below:

Matt Bomer as Christian Grey?

I don't know this actor but knowing now that he is gay would ruin the movie for me. Christian Gray is so heterosexual you cannot cast a gay lead in the part. I have nothing against gays but if you read all 3 books as I did you have formed a strong opinion of the lead character. People go to the movies to fantasize. How can you fantasize about an individual if he is gay and you are not? This could be one of the biggest movies of all time and the lead should definitely be a very macho, heterosexual male. I have never felt this way about any other character played in a movie but Christian is set up as the ultimate sexy partner for a females and it would be difficult to enjoy the movie knowing that the premise is fake and not believable to begin with.

I agree with a lot of these comments. Matt would be excellent in this movie! Why should it matter that he's gay? I didn't even know he was gay but that doesn't change my opinion of him. B.E.E. or whoever needs to shut up and either deal with it or leave. Matt has tons of fans behind him. All your fans LOVE you Matt!!! :)

What does bring gay have to do with pulling off a role?? Neil Patrick Harris is openly gay, married and has kids but plays the BEST womanizer on HIMYM. Matt LOOKS like what the CG character is described as, he's a halfway decent actor (sorry I've only seen him in Magic Mike, not a big White Collar fan haha), and shouldn't have a role denied him because of who he is. People are so disturbing sometimes.

I think he would be perfect! Gay or not he's gorgeous and fits the decription of this charatcer. Hey gay guys are the funniest, the cutest, and they know how to treat a lady because they want to be treated the same way! I could totally see him playing Christian Grey...Now who's going to play Miss Steele???

Now, as for B.E.E.'s comments, this is exactly why actors that are gay do NOT come out of the closet. Because people like B.E.E. see them as gay actors. Instead of actors that happen to be gay. Funny how it's straight women defending Matt and it's a sexually ambiguous man basically shading his abilities. LGB actors don't come out because they want to just act and have their careers and not have to answer questions all the time about their orientation, but when someone like B.E.E. makes comments like this, it puts the cloud over homosexuality and the gay aspect of these actors. It's very sad and it's very harmful comments. People who can't separate sex life from a persons' work, character, personality, are definitely lacking perspective. With all of this being said, Matt isn't right for this role because he's not rough enough. He's a fabulous actor but he doesn't have the same edge that some other actors have that are in consideration for the role of CG.

Shut the hell up, Julie. Don't be mad honey because hot guys would never get with you if you offered them a million dollars. Don't be bitter at gay men. It's not their fault you're unappealing as a mate.

Seriously I think that guy should,nt play no gay character look at that guy he is so sexy, handsome, and sweet, and dont knowr what wrong with these f...king men turning faggat come on look at them beutiful women waisting out there, judgment god is grieving.

Matt would be great for the role! It's not a "ludicrous" choice because he's gay. We have straight actors and actresses play gays and lesbians all the time. What's wrong with a gay actor playing a straight man? Matt played a straight man, having an affair with a woman in White Collar, and he played beautifully just as any other straight actor would play. I say we give him a chance and not base this choice as "ludicrous" by discriminating him. His personal life is different from his work life.

Has Bret Easton Ellis ever seen Matt act because if he had he would never not believe that Matt could play the straight role. He would be amazing cast as CG because he's an amazing actor and though he isn't sexually attracted to Hilarie Burton their scenes are amazing because he ACTS like he's attracted to her.

I agree with Becca!
