Bret Easton Ellis Calls Openly Gay Matt Bomer "Ludicrous" Pick For Fifty Shades of Grey

by at . Comments

Bret Easton Ellis may be no longer under consideration to write the Fifty Shades of Grey screenplay, but he's still making his opinions about it known.

Namely, he says it would be "ludicrous" to cast a gay actor - specifically Matt Bomer - as Christian Grey in the film because of his sexuality.

The openly gay Bomer (White Collar, Magic Mike) is considered by some people to be a perfect Christian based on his looks and acting ability.

It's to say Ellis, 48, who raised eyebrows last year by calling Glee a puddle of HIV, is not one of those people angling for Matt to be cast.

Ellis insists he is not discriminating on grounds of sexual orientation, but unabashedly believes Bomer is a bad choice. He wrote on Twitter.

"Okay. Let's finalise this ... Matt Bomer is totally hot and a very good actor. He is NOT right for Christian Grey and it complicates the role."

"I don't care how good an actor you are but being married to another man complicates things for playing CG."

"This is NOT about discrimination. It's about an intensely straight actor wanting absolutely to screw Ana Steele."

"Fifty Shades of Grey: the most popular book on the planet having Matt Bomer - a gay actor - play Christian Grey is absolutely ludicrous. Why?"

"Okay I'll say it. Matt Bomer isn't right for Christian Grey because he is openly gay. He's great for other roles but this is too big a game."

"And I think if Matt Bomer wants the role which I doubt the international press tour will be an embarrassing fiasco. He's not CG. Never."

"I am NOT discriminating Matt Bomer because of his sexuality. Fifty Shades of Grey demands an actor that is genuinely into women. Get it?!?"

"I actually think it's cool that women want Matt Bomer as Christian Grey. It means that we've moved beyond stereotypes and that gay is hot."

"I think Matt Bomer is incredibly handsome and a good actor but I think he comes off totally gay in White Collar. And that is why no to CG."

NOTE: The role has not been cast, but Bomer (like the Vampire Diaries' Ian Somerhalder) is frequently discussed as a possible casting choice.

It's unclear if enough readers even know who he is, or care that he's gay, to influence their perception of his character and on-screen chemistry.

As a professional actor he could probably sell it, but opinions will likely vary on how well. As for why Ellis is ranting about it ... who knows.

What do you think of Ellis' comments? And do you think Bomer would make a good CG? Sound off in the comments - and in the poll - below:

Matt Bomer as Christian Grey?

Matt is gorgeous. But, the role demands a man that sizzles on the screen for women (not men). Grey is all about his male sexuality with women. I think the best casting would be for them to find an unknown actor. Someone in mid to late 20's that can pull off the role of a man that possesses the ability to control billions of dollars and any woman he wants. (gee Matt would be such bad casting they may was well get a gay woman to pay Ana) - then they could just sh*t can the whole move.

Everyone has got GIFTS and TALENTs but in all we need experince. It's not about being gay or bisexual, but it's all about giving life to the script/character. If Bommer ain't good for the job then another with good & more experience with 'Women' should do it. End of matter.

I still like the guy from Person Of Interest ,Jim Cheviezel, or hyowever it is spelled. Totally hot and deep.

he is so lying it is about the fact tat matt is gay and pwe all kno tat he can play a womanizer hav u watched white collar lately

I'm sure a self-loathing bisexual like Ellis has as finely tuned a gaydar as anyone, much better than mine. But I was surprised when I heard Bomer is gay. He does NOT come off as gay on White Collar, he has good chemistry with the women he flirts with. Doogie Houser OTOH, I agree with Ellis there, he doesn't credibly play a skirt chaser. And TBBT rocks!

Matt Bomer is too short and too old to play CG. Hayden Christensen is the correct age and gorgeous.

I don't care what anyone says gay or not. Matt Bomer should get this part. He is sexy and was my first choice from the get go. He does wonderful playing a straight guy in White Collar. He hooks up with plenty of women in that series. Acting is its exact definition. Playing a role being someone who you aren't. That's the point. It would be a very limited industry if you had to find a part that was exactly who you are. That would have to be an auto biography and lets face it not everyone is that interesting.

Jack Davenport or Richard Armitage would be awesome as Christian Grey. Both British actors, but very sexy!

Have to add my "fifty cents" on Matt being cast as Christian Grey. NO WAY, he is a really good actor but not sexy enough. The lead will be very hard to fill but I can tell you one thing, if he is cast, I will not see the movie.I so do agree with Edie on this one and what she has to say. Although I am not into Aston Kutcher, he might be able to fill the lead actor role. The Fifty Shades books has left us "women" feeling that Christian Gey is above and beyond any man that we could ever imagine lives.Matt will mostly be remembered as that bad boy from Gulding Light. As I said, he is a very good actor and I am not against gays as I have many gay friends. Just rethink who the lead will be!!!!!!!!!!

Ilove Ian on VD but he is to evil bad guy & I can't see him playing a classy businessman. The only one I feel fits the part is Henry Cavill. His Dunhill ads on youtube SCREAM Fifty & run like a mini 50 shades movie. He has the looks, the body, the eyes, that boyish smile & sexy smirk. He has already played domineering, classy, seductive, pained & playful on Tudors as well as done the nudity & sex scenesvery convingly & sexy. He has the various facial expressions to be playful, sweet & loving Christian as well as pained submissive & dominant sexual Christian he is the right age at 29 & height 6ft1. Lifestyle aside,Matt does not have a better resume to show he can pull off the dark side & the sex scenes are so much more than what he has done & we would need aomeone with sexual experience with a woman to be convincing as a sexual hetero dominant. No acting ability could make up for that lack of experience.
