Michael Johnson: Slaves' Descendants Make Better Athletes

by at . Comments

U.S. Olympic track legend Michael Johnson, who won gold medals in 1992 and 1996 and posted numerous world records, made an eye-opening comment recently.

In an interview with the UK's Daily Mail, the sprinter posited that hard work and determination were mostly responsible for his world class athletic talent.

That and one other historical factor.

M. Johnson

Michael Johnson explained, "All my life ... I believed I became an athlete through my own effort and determination, but it's impossible to think that being descended from slaves hasn't left an imprint through the generations."

"Difficult as it was to hear, slavery has benefited descendants like me ... I believe there is a superior athletic gene in us. Over the last few years, athletes of Afro-Caribbean and Afro-American descent have dominated athletics finals."

Johnson still holds the 400-meter world record. The all-time best 100- and 200-meter races were both run by Usain Bolt ... of Jamaica.

"It's a fact that hasn't been discussed openly before. It's a taboo subject in the States but it is what it is. Why shouldn't we discuss it?" Johnson adds.

Doesn't explain Michael Phelps, but it's an interesting theory.

You can say it was wrong for slaveholders to breed selectively, and you would be right. Of course the entire institution of slavery was wrong and place whatever terrible adjective you would like here to describe it. But to say that it hasn't had an impact on African American's athletic abilities is just stupid. If two tall people mate you generally have tall offspring. Same is true for two short people. Centuries of slaveholders breeding the strongest slaves to one another have lead to African Americans being a more athletic race. I don't see how this is a controversy. I'm not defending the institution of slavery, I'm just saying that is a large portion of why African Americans are more athletic than whites. Really until the last 40 years or so when sports stars starting making big money this wasn't an issue.

Most you Americans are idiots..lol...only if you people knew what us people really thought of you!

As racist as it sounds it true I'm a black man and I run fast jump high and bench press 75 lbs more then my body weight but swim like a rock but hell dis is American say what u want when u want I find racism funny it prejudice I don't fell

I remember Eddie Murphy saying in a movie that black guys were faster due to having to run away from the cops. I don't care what race the USA athletes are. I just want them to win for the USA.

im sure jimmy the greek is up in heaven giving his finger to this black a-hole. black people are so 2 faced. they say this racist shit and no one calls them on it. that's because white people are raised with class whereas black people are raised to find any opportunity possible to sue so they can make easy money and not have to actually hold down a job.

Yup jimmy the Greek was a famous sportscaster fired for saying plantation owners bread the biggest strongest slaves to make a superior slave.
It's a fact.

As a caucasian, I was faster than any african-american back in college. I was always running into that darn "wall of wind" after just 5-10 yds (almost everyone won't know what that is). A few times I was told by an african-american who thought they were very fast, that I "must have some black" in me. I considered this racist but said nothing as I always had some african-american friend jump all over them for saying.
"What if" I said that some african-american "must have some white" in them for something they were excelling in? OMG the accusations of racism would be ringing in my ears.

so a black guy can say this racist crap and get away with it but if a white guy said the same thing, that blacks are stronger because they come from slaves, that white guy would be jailed and fired from his job. this Michael Johnson should keep his fat black mouth shut! next thing you know he'll be referring to his black friends as niggaz. such a double standard.

Not many great swimmers though are there?
