Anderson Cooper: I'm Gay

by at . Comments

CNN's Anderson Cooper recently admitted for the first time, in the context of an email exchange with The Daily Beast's Andrew Sullivan, that he is gay.

Sullivan, who is also gay, asked Cooper for comment on an EW story about gay people in public life coming out differently than in years past.

As the visibility of gay people - high-profile or not - is at the core of individuals, the deceasing newsworthiness of such revelations is encouraging.

Anderson Cooper Gay

Asked for his take on the subject, Cooper told Sullivan - and gave him the go-ahead to print - what he's never matter-of-factly said before:

"The fact is, I'm gay, always have been, always will be, and I couldn’t be any more happy, comfortable with myself, and proud."

On why he hasn't made it an issue before now, he says:

"Although my job puts me in the public eye, I have tried to maintain some level of privacy in my life. Part of that has been for purely personal reasons."

"I think most people want some privacy for themselves and people they are close to."

"But I've also wanted to retain privacy for professional reasons. Since I started as a reporter 20 years ago, I've often found myself in some very dangerous places."

"For my safety and the safety of those I work with, I try to blend in as much as possible, and prefer to stick to my job of telling other people’s stories, and not my own."

"I have found that sometimes the less an interview subject knows about me, the better I can safely and effectively do my job as a journalist."

"I've always believed that who a reporter votes for, what religion they are, who they love, should not be something they have to discuss publicly."

"As long as a journalist shows fairness and honesty in his or her work, their private life shouldn't matter. I’ve stuck to those principles for my entire career, even when I’ve been directly 'the gay question,' which happens occasionally."

"I did not address my sexual orientation in the memoir I wrote several years ago because it was a book focused on war, disasters, loss and survival. I didn't set out to write about other aspects of my life."

"Recently, however, I’ve begun to consider whether the unintended outcomes of maintaining my privacy outweigh personal and professional principle."

"It’s become clear to me that by remaining silent on certain aspects of my personal life for so long, I have given some the mistaken impression that I am trying to hide something - something that makes me uncomfortable, ashamed or even afraid."

"This is distressing because it is simply not true."

Homosexuals should not have children by adoption or otherwise. Again, it supports an unatural life style and creates an atmosphere for all children and to accept homosexuality whether they want to or not. They are forced to accept it in school and pushed to not let their own minds work naturally. Billy, you have a Mommy & Daddy and Mary you have a Daddy and a Daddy but that's OK and we all have to accept it. Then the child of the homosexual parents gets shown some favoritism because she has homosexual parents and Billy gets to shake his head and wonder what in hell is going on. The big deal is that Billy has to accept it because it's promoted. There's nothing wrong about Mary's homosexual parents but there will be something wrong with Billy if he doesn't toe the line.

A unity parade unites both sides. It's not just celebrating homosexuals. It signifies the acknowledgement of both forms of sexuality. In terms of surrogates and children for homosexuals well I think they should adopt. Is it not fair on the kid? Well if everyone didn't discriminate, the only difference is stereotypical gender roles that should not affect the way the child is viewed and treated. In my school they promote acceptance. But I am aware of various institutions that frown upon the idea. I think that we just need to not discriminate or purposely hurt people. Our hurtful views should only surface in a fashion that doesn't hurt.

Curious. In my opinion you have just promoted homosexuality by saying that there should be a unity parade when all 50 States allow homosexual marriage. That's the kind of talk I speak of. Let's get it going some more. Let's have a big parade and a big party. Homosexuals can now get married anywhere in the country Hoorah! Hoorah!! Fantastic. Let's run it down the throats of the heterosexuals. And what should we do next? Well, let's get all the homosexuals to surrogate as many children as possible and try to raise them as homosexuals and hopefully we can surpass the number of heterosexuals.
I must really sound ignorant now. But what do you sound like? You see what I mean about it in my face. Big parade, big promotion etc.. etc..

What?!? They teach tolerance in the school systems? How dare they (tongue in cheek) try to keep peace! The school systems DO NOT do that in my state. So that statement is foreign to me. If you did use more slur words it would diminish your stance by making yourself seem ignorant. @Open your eyes,
One day gay marriage will be legal in all 50 states. When that day arrives they should throw a unity parade. Until then I'll keep fighting the fight........

I feel hurt when governments and schools push the homosexual thing on everyone. No more Mommy and Daddy because it hurts the kids of a homosexual. The governments don't allow opinions of homosexuality while they back and promote it and attend homosexual marriages to support it. So if anyone is hurt by my little comments, tough. And the day will come when it will be OK to marry your goat or dog and the liberals will go along with that as well.Maybe not at first but when it has been around for a while they'll get used to it.

If I was homosexual and I read Bowser's comments I'd feel hurt. You are right though. There are worse out there. I acknowledge that Bowser is entitled to his opinion but he is being a bit blunt about it. And I know that you feel there is an over promotion of being homosexual and that takes away from what it is. It shouldn't be over or under acknowledged and we should treat homosexuals and heterosexuals in the same manner publicly at least.

open your eyes, as long as homosexuals keep telling the world they are homosexuals (sorry, GAY), I'll keep telling homosexuals that they have hosen a disgusting life style and promise to stop the minute they do. And I'll do it publicly or on any site or anywhere I want.

I should be using more slur words. If you are a homosexual (like Anderson or any other person) go ahead and be one. If every heterosexual was announcing that he/she was so, I'll bet the homosexuals would get sick and tired of it and the slur words would be flying. I don't care who's homosexual, just keep it away from me and that means the the talk of it and the sight of it. It sickens me. The world doesn't need to know or care about the next homosexual out of the closet, celebrity or not. Be one and shut up about it. It's like a big promotion, an advertisement that we don't need to hear about and the more we hear it the more we dislike and disagree with it. Is that so difficult to get and understand?

Open your eyes,
It's Bowsers opinion, he's entitled to it. He not saying slur words, I've heard worse. He doesn't like the act, but I will say hetero couples chose anal play. Homosexuality can be a choice for some AND you can be born that way.
I found humor in the liberal bandwagon comment you made. I am far from the left side. As I said my child will always have my support, doesn't mean I turn political.

To the curious sparkle baby! Precisely my point. Also, he's not being very nice about them on this site. He might not publicly humiliate and offend them but he does not hesitate online without any thought as to who could be viewing this. Bowser! Seriously, it's okay to feel how you do just don't go like continuously publicly stating it is disgusting.
