Anderson Cooper: I'm Gay

by at . Comments

CNN's Anderson Cooper recently admitted for the first time, in the context of an email exchange with The Daily Beast's Andrew Sullivan, that he is gay.

Sullivan, who is also gay, asked Cooper for comment on an EW story about gay people in public life coming out differently than in years past.

As the visibility of gay people - high-profile or not - is at the core of individuals, the deceasing newsworthiness of such revelations is encouraging.

Anderson Cooper Gay

Asked for his take on the subject, Cooper told Sullivan - and gave him the go-ahead to print - what he's never matter-of-factly said before:

"The fact is, I'm gay, always have been, always will be, and I couldn’t be any more happy, comfortable with myself, and proud."

On why he hasn't made it an issue before now, he says:

"Although my job puts me in the public eye, I have tried to maintain some level of privacy in my life. Part of that has been for purely personal reasons."

"I think most people want some privacy for themselves and people they are close to."

"But I've also wanted to retain privacy for professional reasons. Since I started as a reporter 20 years ago, I've often found myself in some very dangerous places."

"For my safety and the safety of those I work with, I try to blend in as much as possible, and prefer to stick to my job of telling other people’s stories, and not my own."

"I have found that sometimes the less an interview subject knows about me, the better I can safely and effectively do my job as a journalist."

"I've always believed that who a reporter votes for, what religion they are, who they love, should not be something they have to discuss publicly."

"As long as a journalist shows fairness and honesty in his or her work, their private life shouldn't matter. I’ve stuck to those principles for my entire career, even when I’ve been directly 'the gay question,' which happens occasionally."

"I did not address my sexual orientation in the memoir I wrote several years ago because it was a book focused on war, disasters, loss and survival. I didn't set out to write about other aspects of my life."

"Recently, however, I’ve begun to consider whether the unintended outcomes of maintaining my privacy outweigh personal and professional principle."

"It’s become clear to me that by remaining silent on certain aspects of my personal life for so long, I have given some the mistaken impression that I am trying to hide something - something that makes me uncomfortable, ashamed or even afraid."

"This is distressing because it is simply not true."

Are you stupid? They're not the same thing and the concept is not the same. Bestiality and homosexuality cannot be compared. Having sexual relations with that of a different species that is mentally different; they operate on a different level. How can you know if an animal feels the same depth that you do in a relationship?

Oh, I'm against homosexuality as much as I am with the advertsing and promotion. Anything as filty as homosexuality and the acts of homosexuals should be suppressed forever and would be if it weren't for the liberal boneheads who got behind it, no pun intended.
If someone chooses to be a homosexual, there's nothing I can do about it so go ahead and be one. Just stf up about it.
Getting back to the goat thing, it too is suppressed but what about the future? It will only take a few goat lovers to set the liberal mentality off again and in the years to come we'll get some promotion and advertising in our faces about that while the world becomes more acceptable of it, possibly not agreeing, but accepting. Same dirt, same unnatural acts, same filthy acts. Who's missing something here?

Homosexuality isn't the same thing as advertising homosexuality. If you feel it's unnatural that's okay but what you're really against is the promotion of this sexuality. In case you haven't noticed, homosexuality has been suppressed for a long time so now that the world is starting to acknowledge this, they are excited to receive the rights they previously weren't entitled to or commit acts they previously weren't allowed to. So yes it is being overly focused on and you may feel like it's in your face but that is just a phase. Once the whole world accepts (not necessarily agree) that will settle down and everything will be equal and not "in your face".

Awareness, advertising or showtime it's all the same thing to push it. That's why we're faced with performances in public places, bowling alleys, restaurants ,huge parades with little or no clothes on, etc.So if you think I'm rude that's too bad. Look at what we have to listen to and see on radio, tv, newspapers. there's always another homosexual coming out and it's always in our face. That's much more rude than I could ever be. If it hurts on this site, then leave the site or bring an argument that makes some sense. All I've seen so far is a cunning array of angles to justify it.
It doesn't matter how many different sentences you use to try and justify homosexuality, it's still a dirty act when homosexuals have sex with each other.
It's as unnatural as having sex with an animal. No difference.

It's not advertising. It is raising awareness and you are combining that with homosexuality as a sexuality. If it absolutely revolts you, don't you think it's common courtesy to not be rude about it like on this site? They're human beings too with feelings.

open your eyes, I don't need anyone to give me a version of what homosexuality is. It is a unnatural, filthy lifestyle choice. To me it's no different than a man being attracted to his goat, whether Billy or Nanny for sexual pleasure and whatever else. As I've said before there is something wrong with their hormone balance or brain or whatever. Get some professional help. They're weak. If someone wants to be homosexual or have sex with his goat, GO AHEAD. It's the same thing, exactly. I don't want to hear about it or SEE it. It makes me sick. If it is so widely accepted, why the big parades and constant show? Answer? To advertise it, to get people to like it etc etc. Goat sex will be much more accepted in 30 years if someone starts advertising it.

You're combining homosexuality and using homosexuality as an excuse to be affectionate in public. They're not the same things. Just because you've had a couple of negative experiences, it doesn't mean that that is a representation of what homosexuality is. Homosexuality is being sexually attracted to people of the same gender; not publicly displaying that attraction or using it to get away with things. They're different Bowser. Are you against homosexuality or what has come out of it in your opinion?

open your eyes, I don't get the intertwining. I was giving several examples of what homosexuals do to gain attention and to let us all know they are homosexuals whether we like it or not. It's a show and a spectacle. Heterosexuals don't parade around and perform in bowling alleys and public. Homosexuals need to keep making us aware of the lifestyle they've chosen for their own little reasons. Insecurity perhaps. And yes, there were mothers at the bowling alley packing up their children and leaving. No refund either. "Gay Day". Very sickening day.

Bowser, the concept of homosexuality shouldn't be discriminated against but I do think that PDA across all sexuality should be kept quite conservative. Kissing and fondling in public isn't acceptable especially in environments where there are young children. "gay day" is no excuse and it is not celebrating homosexuality. There's two separate concepts that you are intertwining.

Folks, curious thought I lived in San Fran but I don't. Can you imagine what's going on over there. I live in a much smaller city about 1200 miles from SF. I've been there a few years back and there is some serious homosexual stuff going on, I'm here to tell you. Bingo, bango, bongo time.
