Timothy Poe, America's Got Talent Soldier/Stutterer, Stands By Story

by at . Comments

Last night, viewers were treated to one surprisingly impressive act on America's Got Talent: Andrew De Leon, a gothic-looking opera singer.

They were also treated to one controversial contestant: Timothy Poe, a veteran who claimed to have developed a major stutter after suffering an injury in Afghanistan. You can watch video of his audition and backstory here...

HOWEVER, multiple sources have now come forward and are casting doubt on Poe's assertion that a RPG blast in 2009 resulted in this brain-damaged condition.

First, there's the Minnesota National Guard, which said in a statement to Yahoo! TV: "Sgt. Poe's official military records do not indicate that he was injured by a grenade in combat while serving in Afghanistan in 2009, as he reports.

Then, there's investigative work by The Associated Press, which dispute Poe's self-proclaimed 14 years of service and state it could only find evidence that he was a specialist for nine years and did not receive a Purple Heart, which is handed out to all military personnel injured in combat.

Finally, there's this simple quotes from Poe's ex-wife to The New York Post: "There were no combat injuries. I think he developed a 'feel sorry for me' stutter."

Poe tells TMZ, however, that it's not unusual for there to be medical record snafus coming out of Afghanistan and that he DID receive treatment at a medical facility in that country before moving to one in Landstuhl, Germany.

But he also said, citing legal reasons, that he cannot produce any evidence to back up these claims.

What do you think of all this? Do you believe Timothy Poe's story?

Kenichi Ebina Labeled "Biggest Talent in the World" by Howie Mandel

Kenichi Ebina is a serious talent. But is he the greatest talent in all the world? Debate now!

just because someone said it never happened does not meant it is not true. my husband served twice in Vietnam and they said he did not, cause they could not find his records,he has all his records,he kept them here at home to make sure they never got lost. My husband went through hell to prove he served his country. he has the physical proof.

If he is lying he should face death by firing squad.

@Rabbit I hate the Dish network. Their Auto Hop feature doesn't work! The best day of my life was when I cancelled the Dish network and switched to one of their more reliable competitors.

Also, if you go back and play it, he missed several notes on the guitar as well.

I thought he was just an "okay" singer, anyway. He went flat a couple of times, and his vocals were kinda shaky at times. I did like his story, and cried when he teared up about his kids. His story was really why I was pulling for him. There are other contestants on the show that are much better vocalists.

Americas got Talent is another one of my favorite shows found on primetime. It’s crazy how some people can do weird things and call it talent. I’ve been impressed with Andrew De Leon and he's doing great. I don’t know how I feel about the Timothy Poe issue. I think he could possibly be lying but I’m no expert. What I’ve enjoyed more than ever on my primetime shows is the option to skip commercials. It's all possible by using my Auto Hop feature from Dish. All the networks can still advertise all their commercials. Dish's only making it easier by eliminating the need to manually fast forward commercials. I just have to press play and watch my episodes once I confirm whether I want to skip commercials or not. One of my coworkers at Dish showed me how Auto Hop worked, and it’s now one of my favorite features. This takes the hassle of hitting the fast forward and rewind buttons to get to the next scene.

This is so sad; he has a great voice and he knew that his lies would eventually catch up to him. I am so sorry for his family and friends.

Alright 'Jenn Skidmore' even i as a 14 year old knows better than to give out personal information. Yes he has put his self in a very stupid & bad position, but you dont just go around giving out his number so even more people can freak at him. If someone did that to you, im sure you would be pretty frustrated and pissed off too. Thats just childish. He's getting enough loads of crap thrown at him, so personally i dont think you need to make it even worse. He was being stupid & did this to his self. Let him handle it, dont need the whole world to know everything about him. So please keep things to yourself, & mind your own business. Thanks (:

The sad part is, is that he knows that people that knows him is watching him. I have know Tim for the last like 7 or more years of my life & have i ever heard him stutter like he did here. He is stupid, pathetic, and just wrong for doing this. I feel bad for his kids having to grow up with this humiliation, especially for his youngest daughter. It's this when to find out how adults have not yet "Grown up". Man i feel sorry for what hes put his kids through.

If the National Guard released that information about him without his written permission, then they violated the Privacy Act. They CAN BE sued for that. I don't know if he is a fraud or not, but his rights have been violated.
