Military Moms Breastfeeding in Uniform: National Pride or Over the Line?

by at . Comments

National pride? Disgrace? Somewhere in the middle?

A photo of two servicewomen breastfeeding their children while in uniform has gone viral and added a new layer to the ongoing debate over nursing in public.

It's probably safe to say the Time Magazine breastfeeding cover went over quite well with Mom2Mom, a breastfeeding support group for military mothers.

In a series of tasteful professional photos showing beaming moms nursing kids, one jumps out for obvious reasons: the photo of two servicewomen below ...

Military Moms Breastfeeding

"A lot of people are saying it's a disgrace to the uniform. They're comparing it to urinating and defecating [while in uniform]," says Crystal Scott, a military spouse living at Fairchild AFB outside Spokane, Wash., who started Mom2Mom in January.

"It's extremely upsetting. Defecating in public is illegal. Breastfeeding is not."

It was Scott's idea to ask photographer Brynja Sigurdardottir to take the photos and create posters for National Breastfeeding Awareness Month in August.

One of the moms photographed in uniform, Terran Echegoyen-McCabe, breastfeeds her 10-month-old twin girls on her lunch breaks during drill weekends.

"I have breast-fed in our lobby, in my car, in the park ... and I pump, usually in the locker room," says the proud member of the Air National Guard."

"I'm proud to be wearing a uniform while breastfeeding. I hope [the photo] encourages other women to know they can, whether they're active duty, guard or civilian."

She said she's surprised by the reaction to the photos, which also feature her friend Christina Luna, because it never occurred to her it would cause a stir.

"There isn't a policy saying we can or cannot breastfeed in uniform," Echegoyen-McCabe says. "I think we do need to be able to breastfeed in uniform and be protected."

What do you think? Should they be allowed to?

I think this is a disgrace. Most men seem to say go for it - I think they just want to see a woman's breast. I support breastfeeding if it is done in private. Where it should be. A woman that has to flaunt her breast in public (uniform or not)to feed a child has NO CLASS. It should be done in a comfortable serene environment. Can you imagine these children as teens and seeing photos of their Mom's flaunting their breast to the world. How degrading and embarassing.l

BREAST FEEDING IS GREAT! JUST NOT IN UNIFORM. IT IS A DISGRACE TO THE UNIFORM! IF YOU BREAST FEED, WHICH I DID, JUST DONT DO IT IN UNIFORM. I NEVER BREAST FED IN UNIFORM BECAUSE I WAS TRAINED NOT TO DISGRACE THE UNIFORM OR MILITARY IN ANY WAY.

Better breastfeeding in uniform than two men kissing in uniform. We fight for gays to be able to be open in the military, a natural thing such as breastfeeding is an issue? WTF?

WHY? WHy? Why do we need to see this? Is nothing private any more? Next thing you know it will be no big deal to see people pooping in public. Its just unbelievable what people need to do for attention. Where in the he!! have all the manners gone?

@Good job--You sound like a "fat-o-phobe"! Shame on you! Fat folks have feelings...not to mention RIGHTS, too!!! These slams against overweight people have no place here! The issue isn't proper nutrition--its about decency and inappropriate baring of one's hooters in public! You're probably some frustrated skinny b*tt who can't get a date. Or some male chauvinist pig who loves attacking women because of possible impotency problems! Either way...you're comments are soooooo off base! You better hope some Big Mamma don't come barrelin' up to you and sit on ya! Yeah! If she whipped out her woo-hoos you'd be knocked out and in a coma till 2020! Don't think you'd wanna go there! Watch yo mouth!!!!!

The Air Force Instructions that these ladies chose to break are black and white. All military members are required to follow and enforce all AFIs. Their blatant refusal to follow instructions in punishable under the UCMJ. They should be held responsible for their actions. I support the right to breastfeed anywhere. But I am required to enforce AF standards and expect the same from ALL NCOs to follow and enforce the standards.

@ Debbie- in my day in the 70's the real issue was what was going on in the backseat of a camaro at the Drive-in! It was disgusting and disrespectful to say the least!

I agree with Tracy and stupid wh ores. No, there is nothing wrong with breast feeding, duh! The issue here is the woman lifted her whole shirt and exposed her breasts! In my day,70's, women did that right in the stores. It soon became a thing of the past because they were making customers, others feel uneasy. For one, most men love seeing the boobs, so why would they complain? It doesn't take much to put a shaw on or throw a baby blanket over yourself. She wants to be looked at, that's all I can figure. Must love her bigger milk filled breasts and want to show them off. "This" Military mom needs to learn how to respect others!!!!
