Could Kate be realizing that some of the appeal of her show was Jon? Could be. Jon said once that "reality television isn't a career." He's the smart one. It isn't. I think it takes advantage of ordinary people like Kate who think they can parlay a few years in the spotlite into a lifetime career (one that usually takes acting lessons, inate talent, casting calls, practice, etc). Hopefully she saved a lot of the money they made from the show because the future might not bring such a windfall.
