Dharun Ravi Sentenced to 30 Days in Jail For Role in Tyler Clementi Suicide

One-time Rutgers student Dharun Ravi was sentenced Monday to 30 days in jail for his role in the suicide of his former roommate, Tyler Clementi.

Ravi was found guilty of invasion of privacy and hate crimes in March.

The 20-year-old did not speak at his sentencing this morning. He will begin serving jail time May 31. Ravi cried as his mother spoke in court.

"The media was ripping him apart with their misleading facts ... He was absolutely devastated and broken into pieces,” Sabitha Ravi pleaded.

Ravi and Clementi

"I do not believe he hated Tyler Clementi," Judge Glenn Berman told the packed courtroom in announcing his decision. "He had no reason to."

"But, I do believe he acted out of colossal insensitivity."

Dharun Ravi was convicted of bias intimidation, witness tampering, hindering arrest and numerous other charges in connection with the case.

This all stemmed from his role in using a webcam to observe Clementi's date with a man in their dorm room in 2010, then Tweeting about it.

Ravi (above, left) Tweeted about what he'd witnessed and invited others to watch Clementi (above, right) make out with his male love interest.

That man's name has not been revealed.

Prosecutors said Ravi was motivated by a hatred. Ravi consistently has denied hatred of gays. In any case, Tyler Clementi killed himself.

He jumped off the George Washington Bridge on Sept. 22, 2010, after leaving a note on Facebook reading, "Jumping off the gw bridge. Sorry."

He was 18.

In the days leading up to his sentencing, several prominent gay activists made public pleas for Ravi not to be sent to prison, reports ABC News.

But the man captured on the webcam with Tyler Clementi did not agree. His attorney, Richard Pompelio, read his statement in court Monday.

It said, "While I bear no anger towards Mr. Ravi, after much thought and many sleepless nights, I must say that Mr. Ravi should serve some type of confinement so that he can reflect on the serious harm he has caused."

"I do not believe that he has taken responsibility for his conduct, and to this day he seems to blame me for the actions he took."

Tyler's father, Joseph Clementi, also said of Ravi: "He had no call to do what he did. Tyler never did anything to Mr. Ravi to cause him harm."

Ravi's actions, said Joseph Clementi, were purely as a result of his seeing Tyler "as someone not deserving basic human decency and respect."

"All because my son was different from him [and] because he was gay."

In her own message, Jane Clementi, Tyler's mom, called Ravi's actions "mean-spirited, they are evil and, most important, they are against the law."

Before trial, Ravi had rejected a plea deal that would have placed him on probation and required community service – and spared him any time behind bars or the threat of deportation to his native India. He chose instead to face a jury.

It's unclear if he faces immigration issues after his 30-day sentence is complete. What do you think? Does he deserve to spend time in jail?

Dharun Ravi was a stupid kid who made a terribly stupid mistake without realizing the ramifications of his actions. As if none of you have ever done anything stupid or prankish to your friends or someone you didn't like at that age? Wait! I said "didn't like", not "hate". And who is to say Ravi hated or didn't like his roommate. He'll serve his 30 days, terrified every moment of them, I'm sure. Hopefully, he will be unmolested in that county jail and then start his life, even with the stigma that he have to deal with for the rest of his own life. And hopefully, he, as well as others, will realize that this kind of behavior is unnaceptable. As for you people screaming that he should have served time in prison, that he should be raped in prison, etc., give us all a break. Again, as if none of you have ever done anything like this in your past, computer or not?

Please, stop the hatred. There are clearly more questions than answers. It is a sad fact that this young man committed suicide regardless of the reason. The invasion of privacy committed by the defendant here is despicable. Regardless of the sexual orientation of the partners, nobody has the right to film and post such personal material without permission. Hate only fuels hate. Lets try some education, empathy and compassion. This is a very sad story no matter how you look at it.

To respond to all the worthless and ignorant comments I have seen here already: 1. It was his dorm room, his life. Having "buttsex" as you eloquently put it isn't contagious. I'm sure his roommate had straight sex there, why couldn't Tyler do what he wanted? And check your facts. Him and his date kissed, nothing more. 2. Ravi invaded his privacy. Would you like to be videotaped doing something intimate and then it broadcast?? I'm guessing no. 3. Suicide is definitely not a rational choice but that's beside the point. Ravi broke the law by invading privacy, that's what he got the 30 days for. Yes, the media has focused on the fact that Tyler killed himself, but that's independent of the point. 4. This sends the message bullying isn't ok, and it isn't. It's 30 days he's losing, Tyler has lost his life. Maybe in the future, a life will be saved because Ravi won't act so ignorant.

WES, AMBER and H8 you 3 are idiots. Oh and by the way it only takes one hour locked up to get your ass beat down. They will pc him and he will be in with homosexuals. Good luck punk.

There had to have been many more instances of bullying in this young mans life in order for him to take his life. He had to have been depressed beyond most peoples comprehension. But to solely blame another young man (who acted completely idiotic by video-taping what was clearly a personal situation) is not 100% fair. YES, bullying over the years has gotten completely out of control and hopefully by serving 30 days and probation for what he did might actually teach others to know that there are actually consequences for stupid things you do to other innocent people. NO ONE should be bullied for their sexual preferences just as no one should be bullied for being handicapped or for liking a particular music or clothing style. This is a horrible situation and I truly hope this young man learns from his behavior...

Suicide isn't generally a "rational" choice. Impossible to draw straight line from one singular event to a suicide

I know I'm in the minority here but if the victim hadn't committed suicide, I highly doubt that there would have been any criminal proceeding at all. And, in the end, the only person who can ever be held responsible for a suicide is the person who commits the act.Edit

How do u know he killed himself over the incident. Maybe he was just tired of looking like Big Bird from Sesame Street. Thats one ugly motherfucker.... I mean FATHERfucker. He is one ugly fatherfucker!

What a worthless human being! He should be send 2 life impresioment cus the law talion requires like for like, (nemesis) this is very abecious

Send his ass back to his own country.
