Tyler Perry Speaks on Trayvon Martin Case, Says Racial Profiling Should Be Federal Offense

by at . Comments

In the wake of the Trayvon Martin case an his own experiences, Tyler Perry has called for federal agents to take racial profiling seriously as a potential hate crime.

The Good Deeds director took to Facebook to discuss Martin, who was shot and killed in Florida in February by neighborhood watch captain George Zimmerman.

Moreover, Perry alleges he was pulled over in L.A. late one night for an illegal turn, reprimanded for having tinted windows, and realized he was in big trouble.

Tyler Perry writes on his official page:

“My mother would always say to me, ‘if you get stopped by the police, especially if they are white policemen, you say ‘yes sir’ and ‘no sir’, and if they want to take you in, you go with them. Don’t resist, you hear me?"

"Don’t make any quick moves, don’t run, just go.’ It wasn’t until after I heard her voice that I realized that both officers were white… I didn’t feel safe at all."

"At this point, I told him (the arresting officer) that I wanted to get out of the car. I wanted the passersby to see what was happening.”

However, once a black officer pulled up at the scene and recognized Perry, the officials apologized and let him go. But the incident has stayed with him.

Perry wonders what he might have endured if he lacked celebrity status.

“I know that there are many great officers, patrolmen and security guys out there. I am aware of that. But although we have made significant strides with racial profiling in this country, the world needs to know we are still being profiled."

"Until this situation has improved greatly, I’m not sure how a murder in Florida can be protected by a ‘stand your ground law’. RACIAL PROFILING SHOULD BE A HATE CRIME INVESTIGATED BY THE FBI!!!"

If there's a federal investigation process, he says, "that way local government can’t make the decision on whether or not these people get punished.”

George Zimmerman has not been charged with a crime, claiming he shot Martin in self-defense. A grand jury will be impaneled to hear the case April 10.

everyone is entitled to there own opinions. Everyone has diffrent things to say about this certain topic but I beleive that right is right and wrong is wrong. I can a man follow someone and say he's acting like a criminal when he is only walking. Tyler perry spoke his mind just as everyone in America does. Don't crtitize when you feel that he's in the wrong for saying anything. a teen was killed because of "self- defense" where is the proof? That man was caught up in his own world that he failed to see that he was just minding his business and he killed a teen for no reason. he followed him around even if he did shot him in "self-defense" he still provoked the teen by following him and making him uncomfortable. He should get some type of punishment!

Kate=Cachulain=Caitlyn obviously. Can Hollywood gossip just get 1 of those programmes that only allows u 2 post under 1 screen name? Or the programme that shows us when the same person is leaving comments under different names? Or force us all 2 log in? Or require us 2 use our full real names? Or have an intern to monitor comments? Or block this persons computer???

After reading this story, I find it ridiculous Tyler Perry had the nerve to speak out. I'm a clean-cut white guy, and guess what? When I get pulled over, I am also nervous, and I even listen to the cops, including abiding by his mother's advice of saying "no sir/sir" and NOT running or resisting. Doesn't that go without saying? If you make a habit of resisting the police and saying snappy responses, you can expect to get similar treatment back, that's not racism, that is law enforcement. Furthermore, he admits he took an illegal left, yet is shocked that he'd get pulled over? Why? I expect that for white people as well. Lastly, talking about racial profiling probably isn't a great idea when half the characters he plays (exploits by making HUGE coin off of, incidentally) are essentially black cliches, such as the Madea character, who is basically an old southern black woman that might as well be aunt gemima.

@jesus Hahahahahahahahaha! What a joke! Who's hiding behind a screen name certainly not Our Lord Jesus Christ that's for sure! Hypocrisy comes in so many forms--does it not?!? Yours is at least obvious.

@Leo Or...just maybe? This was an opportunity for "the community" to air their vendetta. There are so many crimes in which blacks have literally gotten away with murder against whites or even hispanics. And you'd think if "the community" believes in and strives for true justice they'd be out there voicing their outrage against those crimes, too. However, they do not. I rest my case.

What's really scary is the amount of closeted racists that take the time to spew hate behind the safety of screen names. Why so angry? If you're not racist then none of this applies to you. How are you affected by this family trying to get justice for the death of their son? You know you can change the channel, choose not to read articles and live your life. Or you can use the internet to say all the things you feel in your heart but don't express in your actual lives, with actual people. If marshal law ever comes, and you are free to say and do exactly what you feel, I have no doubt that you will resemble your forefathers. You have screen names, they had sheets.
